McAfee AV is either more thorough or a whole lot less efficient, because its full scan takes about twice as long as Defender's on my machine. However, McAfee certainly detected and removed the Conficker worm that came back on a USB memory stick that I had been using to save files when working at the local library (hint : clusters like these may not be running AV software on their machines, they rely on a clean re-installation at the start of the day. After that you're at the mercy of whoever used the PC before you). So the question of either/or may not be the right question to ask : perhaps it ought to be, with which other AV software is Defender compatible?
