Google seems to be dead serious to close the “version-gap” to Mozilla Firefox and probably even other popular Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer or Opera in a hurry. The web browser known as the Google Browser was released less than a year ago and is already reaching version 3 which would close the version gap to the Firefox web browser.
Google Chrome 3 has been published on the dev channel from where it can be downloaded and installed on a computer system running a Microsoft windows operating system. The web browser will update existing Google Chrome installations on the system to the latest beta 3 version of it.

There are not many exciting new features in the release despite the jump from version 2 to 3. The release notes list 16 changes to Google Chrome 2.0.180.0 which has been released about two weeks ago. The most notable changes are multiple crash fixes, support for the video tag and fixes to user interface elements drawing improperly on the screen.
Users who are thinking about installing the latest Google Chrome dev release should be extra careful as this release is not intended to be run in work environments. The list of changes do not really make it a necessity to install Google Chrome 3 yet either.

There is something really really wrong with versioning of Google products. :)
Is it so complex to do things in informative way that has some established sense?..
AFAIK ist’s not a Beta – it’s a DEV-Build.
I think you are right, changed the article accordingly.
I find Chrome version numbering very amusing. They have rushed Chrome through 2, and now almost 3 official, non-beta, version numbers while gmail still sits in beta after what, 6 years??
It sounds about right. When you get right down to it, 2.0 held a great many new features, including the ability to compare windows side-by-side, full-page zoom, full-screen, numerous bug fixes, form autocomplete, middle-click scrolling, extra CSS3, and a faster javascript engine.
Sure, you might argue that it should have had those already, but that was only the very first version.
Now, Google is working on Chrome 3.0. This will include HTML5 support, plug-ins, extensions, maybe theming, and probably a few more. The extensions alone are important enough to warrant another version jump.
The current 3.0 is only “What will be called 3.0, in a number of months, once it’s finally released.” It’s completely unfit for public consumption, and is in what was called the ‘developer preview channel’. The idea there is for developers to see some of the new features and to give their own feedback.
For smaller-scale updates, once Chrome has managed to reach the same level as everyone else, I could expect them to have less version jumps. Unless they continue with their extreme innovations, and start pulling the other browsers forward. You never know.
I suggest anyone to give a try to the SRWare’s Iron browser ( http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php ). It has focused on the user’s privacy. More info is available on their website! :)
