I have been aiming for the same on my netbook while keeping it visually pleasing: http://ethsza.deviantart.com/art/netbook-companion-121655507

Theme is chromifox, which I like the best nowadays. Also using:
-Tiny menu to replace the menu bar with a MENU button
-Firegestures as mouse gestures, that has a script to toggle Bookmarks Toolbar (hidden on the screenshot) and Menu Toolbar (can be hidden with Down-Right mouse gesture in my setup)
-Stop or reload button extension - it's such an obvious behaviour that I can't even understand why is it not the FF standard
-Can't be seen on the screenshot, but I found a great way of saving space on the Bookmarks Toolbar by removing the names of bookmarks, only keeping their favicons. Might clutter the big picture a bit, but it is very efficient.

And of course there is always F11 for fullscreen, but I prefer to see my tabs.

here are a few extensions that will give the theme of your choice a minimalist layout and maximize screen real estate:

faviconize tab
tiny menu
hide caption
hide favicons
all in one sidebar
toolbar buttons

move location bar and search bar to menubar along with associated buttons. close navbar. put other buttons (provided by toolbar buttons) you need to use in the all in one sidebar strip.

i never have more than two toolbars open up top, using toggle menubar and toggle bookmarks bar buttons from my sidebar strip, i often have these closed and have none visable.

i have a widescreen and i also use verttabbar which places tabs on the right.
