The installer can download and install the codecs, but it requires an internet connection to get them from mplayer's server because their license isn't compatible and can't be bundled directly into the installer.

An internet connection isn't required to uninstall SMPlayer, there's also one w/ mplayer included but the codecs aren't included for licensing reasons.

I <b>highly</b> recommend this.
It's pretty silly how i manage to not use this player before. Well Since i've used mplayer as my 2ndary player, 1st is K-lite codec pack. I find this pretty good.
It plays all the formats that i needed.

P.S: VLC just doesn't cut out.

Well the best way to find out is to try it out. I used many video players in the past including VLC and stuck with SMPlayer in the end.

I downloaded the SMPlayer 0.6.7 setup.

It seems that SMPlayer 0.6.7 comes with a different installer than previous versions of SMPLayer.

Older versios of SMPlayer and additional codec packages installed from Inno Setup installers. The SMPlayer 0.6.6 or older installation would be updated by the additional codec package installalations (in addition to installing the addition codecs).

SMPlayer 0.6.7 uses a Nullsoft Scriptable Install Script (NSIS) installer and includes the ability to install the addition codecs, but does not include the additional codecs components. The additional codecs would be downloaded from the Internet and installed by the NSIS installer. This means that an Internet connection is necessary to easily fully install and uninstall SMPlayer 0.6.7.

The new difficulty regarding the installation of the additional codecs for SMPlayer 0.6.7 significantly, negatively affects the desirability of the newer version; fully installing the newer SMPlayer product has become more expensive.

The KMPlayer is the most complete solution for me. It has way more options and plays way more formats than SMPlayer.

I think it is included in the main release as an optional package. At least that's what I got from the option that I did not see before there. Not sure if I overlooked it and if it is the same codec package though.

I first found out about SMPlayer from Martin's article at:

http://www.ghacks.net/2008/05/07/smplayer-uncommon-codecs-package/

The article described a codec package that could be installed to allow SMPlayer to play more formats.

As of the update to the http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/downloads.php page with the release of SMPlayer 0.6.7, the codec package is no longer listed for download.

It is unclear as to why the codec package listing was removed after SMPlayer 0.6.7.

I downloaded this just now for the first time. I have DVD files stored in directories. I can open a .vob file, but now I would like to click a button to see the DVD menu. Seems I can't find a button to do this. Can this player be used as a DVD player or not? If so, where is the menu button?
