Rar archives can be protected with a password that has to be supplied before the archive can be unpacked on a computer system. Problems do arise if the password of an archive is not known (anymore). One could try and enter possible combinations manually which could take years to complete or use a rar password cracker to speed up the process of discovering the right rar password.
Possible scenarios are that you forgot the password of a previously created rar archive or that a former employee protected files with a rar password. Whatever it is the rar password cracker will aid the user. The tool utilizes password lists, also called dictionary files, to test against the rar password.
Rar Pass Finder is a portable lightweight tool. The interface is only available in German language but since it consists of only two buttons it does not really make a different. The user should start loading a rar password list using the Passwortliste button.

Rar archives can then be loaded using the Rar-Archiv button or drag and drop. The rar password cracker supports multiple volumes and can also be run from the command line to load an archive automatically into the application. The last loaded password list will automatically be used to find the rar password.

Thanks for the info. Now I can see what those password protected “media” files spammed onto the newsgroups really are.
I got it somewhere else in a rar,
…but it’s password protected.
Did I miss something? It won’t brute force or crack the password it just tries every password on a list? Kinda limits its usefulness don’t ya think?
Joe it is a dictionary attack, not brute force.
Where can one find a good password list, with 10,000 or so common passwords?
I am looking for something that can identify password protected pdfs and remove the restriction. So far I have found A-pdf protection remover does the job best but its a shareware and I am looking for a freeware.
@Noel:
I do not know of any GUI program for removing the password protection, but try this command:
$ pdftk A=PATH_TO_FILE input_pw A=PASSWORD cat NewFile.pdf
I hate the command line, but sometimes it can do things that you can’t easily do with a GUI program.
thanks
