Facebook Photo Album Downloader

If you are a Facebook regular with a solid amount of friends and activities you might have thought about downloading some of the contents, especially pictures but other multimedia content would do as well, from Facebook to the local computer. Think of photo albums that have been uploaded by friends, family or colleagues. It is possible to manually download individual photos from Facebook but it would surely be a time saver to download them all at once.

Facebook Photo Album Downloader is a Firefox extension that can download an entire Facebook photo album in one go. The firefox extension is actually pretty easy to use. All the user has to do is to right-click the View Album link on Facebook and select Download Album With FacePAD. A Javascript popup will appear telling the user that the download will initialize. The photos that are in the Facebook album will be downloaded in the default Firefox download directory.

There is definitely no shortcomings when it comes to chat possibilities on the Internet. Users who want to chat find billions of possibilities from Instant Messengers to forums and IRC. It sometimes might be required to use a chat software that is running on one of the local computers to communicate with other users. ChatX is such a software. The author has designed the chat software to work quickly and efficiently, it comes with an installer and portable version making it an ideal companion for an USB device.

The download comes with both the server and client of the chat program. All that needs to be done to establish a chat is to start the chat server and connect to it. Wikipedia gets books and gets printed

Last year, the German Wikipedia was printed. Now, many Wikipedias worldwide – including the English Wikipedia – has given people the opportunity to compile a book of Wikipedia articles which can then be professionally printed or exported as a PDF or OpenDocument.

Wikipedia has enabled the ‘Book’ extension to MediaWiki, the content management system it utilises. This adds a ‘add page’ link to every page, allowing users to compile a book. This book can then be sorted by the user into chapters. Afterwards, it can be shared with other Wikipedians. Currently, only logged-in users can utilise this tool.

Wikipedia has a built-in rendering engine which will grabs the pages, fetches the images and parses them before they are given to the user as a PDF or OpenDocument text. The user can also use PediaPress to have the book professionally bound and printed.

Thunderbird 3 Beta 2

The Thunderbird email client team is making progress. They released Thunderbird 3 Beta 2 yesterday for public download. Interested users should keep in mind that this is a beta version of the email client. It feels very stable but it can still produce bugs that might delete things unrecoverably. It is therefor not suggested to try out Thunderbird 3 Beta 2 in a work environment. More than 342 changes have been made between beta 1 and beta 2, many bug fixes but some more notable ones include new features like the archiving feature that has been taken right from Gmail. Thunderbird is automatically creating a new entry Archives in the mail folder structure with subfolders for years and months.

Messages can be archived pressing the A key highlighted or by using the archive button that appears in the header area of each message. They will be automatically sorted into the correct year and month folder in the mail structure. That’s very handy for users who receive lots of messages per day that they have to keep.

Another change is a central activity manager that lists the most recent changes in the email client, e.g. retrieving or moving mail. That’s not a lot of new features but Thunderbird was already a very solid mail client. Especially the archiving feature can save lots of time for some users. Thunderbird 3 beta 2 is available for all supported operating systems and languages.

CL1P is an Online Clipboard

Sometimes, you may urgently need to share some information with a friend or family member. Or maybe you need to access a particular file from another computer. The easiest way to do this would be to use portable media like a flash drive. But what if that’s not an option? Then you have to find other means.

One way of accessing files is to use an online clipboard like CL1P. This website allows you to put up data using a unique url that you yourself choose. No sign-up or registration required.

Once the CL1P url is ready, you have plenty of options. The first thing you can do is set the clipboard to take plain or rich text formats. Alternatively, you could turn it into a messageboard. After that, you can either type in your data, or upload files and pictures. The maximum upload limit is 30 MB.

OCZ Vertex Series 120GB SSD

While I’m overall pretty happy with the purchase of the OCZ Core Series II SATA Solid State Drive some disadvantages do come to light every now and then. This happens in situations where many small blocks are written on the Solid State Drive leading to an unresponsive system for a few seconds. This thankfully does not happen to often and the benefits, especially the fast application load time are incredible experiences. Up til now the fastest conventional platter driven hard drives like the Western Digital Velociraptor were able to match the speed of the SSDs in most areas at a more competitive price.

A recent review of the OCZ Vertex Series 120GB SSD might be a turning point though as it is one of the first Solid State Drives that leaves even the fastest platter driven hard drives behind in both benchmarks but also real life tests. Benchmarks are great to compare speeds but the situation can be different under real life circumstances. CD Freaks have posted an extensive test of the OCZ Vertex Series 120GB SSD and compare it to other platter driven hard drives like Samsung’s Spinpoint F1 or Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.10.

The results are astounding: The OCZ Vertex Series 120GB SSD booted Windows Vista to the Welcome Screen in 11.54, install Vista SP1 in 16.12 minutes compared to roughly 40 minutes for all other tested hard drives, performed a Microsoft Office installation in 2.13 seconds compared to 3.43 minutes for the second place finisher or 24052 points in PCMark Vantage HDD suite result while the platter driven hard drives managed scores around the 4000 mark.
