We have given away free licenses to popular commercial software programs in the last 24 days. It was not really clear how you would react to those articles and if a lot of you would participate. That cleared up pretty soon on the first day after the comment count reached the hundreds. From then on it was more or less clear that this was a great idea.
The main question is: How did you like it? We would like to hear your opinion to think about possible changes that we could make in next year’s giveaway. Maybe you would like to see more Linux or Mac programs in the mix, maybe hardware or something else that we did not think about. Whatever it is, let us know and we surely will do our best to please as many users as possible.
One element that worked out quite well was to ask you about the software that you would like to see in the Giveaway. We managed to convince most companies to donate some licenses of those programs and we intend to ask you again in next year what you would like to see.
Now it is your turn to let us know what you think about it. Oh, and merry Christmas to anyone.

The idea was a nice surprise, you managed to get me posting instead of lurking :-)
What was also nice was to see that I already had a few of those giveaways already! I must be on the right track at least.
Many thanks

I thought it was a great idea, I myself picked up USB safe remove and Returnil Premium since both were not limited to a few people and both I had tried in the past and thought a full copy very worth while. To be honest I didn’t comment on most of the other programs since they didn’t really interest me (except Nod32).
Have a great Christmas
it was a great idea and i hope you will do the same next year. i just hoped i could win something :(
it was a great idea
too bad i dident get nod32 ( o well i probally just the luck everyine has)
you should do it next year too :)
wonderful promotion, it had me checking the site every morning to see what was coming up next! i got some great software, and learned about some others that i hadn’t seen before.
next time you could make it more clear what is considered to be a ‘good’ entry. i had the impression that you were hand-picking winners based on their comments, but many people commented as though it was a lottery where the winners were chosen randomly. i’m still not too clear on how it worked, but it was great nonetheless.
anyway many thanks to Martin and the rest of the ghacks team, and of course to the software companies and service providers that donated serials and subscriptions for this great promotion. i’m sure you drew in lots of new readers. let’s hope the site continues to flourish!
Martin!!!
For the next year, first make sure that gHacks stays afloat despite the recession!
:P
OK, you could give away 5 iPhones to readers this new year.
Well I think it was the best idea ever!! And was lucky enough to win two licences \o/ \o/ \o/
So I think, not surprisingly, that it was well worth doing and hope you do it again next year (just wish I could get the Roboform one to work properly!)
Merry Christmas Everyone :)
Merry Chrstmas
I am grateful that I won a license, and I think the hole Christmas Giveaway was a mighty fine idea.
Thanks!
I’m not sure how practical Hardware giveaways would be given the international nature of the site – unless you restrict the giveaway to one country which would be upsetting – software’s probably the best.
Maybe next year you could get those of us who won the chance to write guest reviews of the software? That would help in getting companies involved because they’ll be getting more publicity from it.
Maybe you could ask companies to donate services as well as software, like free web hosting (on a cheap package) for a year, or a few months’s use of a seedbox?
Merry Christmas
I won (yeah, finally I win something!) one license and I’m very happy now…
All the best to Ghacks!
The idea is the best! I’m a regular reader of your site, i mean i used lurk on the posts only but now you made me the habit to comment too! :-) thanks.. Merry christmas
Very nice idea. I would just have liked to know for sure that I didn’t win any license, so a list of winners would have been fine.
Thanks !
The competition was an excellent idea, and the prizes great! But if next year you want to give away hardware, that would be awesome.Although the majority of people might not use a Linux based o/s,i think the ones who do would definitely appreciate the opportunity to win a few good apps.
Merry Christmas gHacks
The idea, plus your effort, was truly appreciated by all…something for which you should be commended. Thank you for thinking of others at this time of year. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.
You don’t need to give anything away to keep me as a reader. Instead, you need to write original content on the subjects that interest me. So far, you’ve got me coming back regularly!
It was great as it was,i could well imagine that there might be a bit more linux applications.
Crazy enough it seems to me not a good idea to to give away Apple mac software, this because Apple Mac users usually have more than enough money
The idea of the Christmas giveaways was great (congratulations!), and the software offered was varied so it might be worthy to people with different interests.
The giveaway which “everyone win”, like the one of “USB Safely Remove”, was really nice too, so everyone could get at least one Chrismas present. You should always do at least one giveaway like this (please!) :)
Doing a giveaway with hardware would get really difficult, as you have readers worldwide. Sending pieces of hardware may be expensive and the hardware may get broken or damaged easily. Solutions like doing it for specific countries would be unfair. Software is the way to go.
And finally, thank you very much for all these Christmas giveaways you’ve done. They are really nice Christmas presents :)
Merry Christmas, and happy new year 2009!
I want to thank Martin for this excellente giveaway.
I won 2 licences, and I’m very pleased and even honored.
To everyone: an execellent 2009!
all the best
Even if next year will not be any more awards, I’ll read everything with great interest the presentation of programs that help me understand better my computer
martin, i’ve been checking you pretty much since your start up, and you continue to be a not-to-be-missed daily read.
it’s been wonderful to see you grow as you have, continually improving and expanding. i hope 2009 brings more of the same for you.
a major accomplishment of yours this last year was your success in persuading me to turn off adblock here; no small feat, that!
as regards the giveaways, as others have suggested, it would be nice to know the protocol of winner selection.
merry christmas and happy new year!
(i’ll be spending much of my new year trying to figure out how returnil works)
The giveaway has lead me to the site – which I have now bookmarked and will return to in the New Year. I hope to venture into Linux on my home computer and the site looks as if it will be very helpful.
The idea of hardware giveaway is interesting but like it’s been mentioned not as easy and limiting it to (one) country would not be the best idea in my opinion, although many contests around the world are like that.
Stefan’s idea of services like web hosting is interesting as well, but in my opinion I would find it more interesting if giveaways don’t expire, I am not and won’t complain if they do expire but just saying it would be slightly less interesting if there are term limit giveaways.
But ultimately it comes down to what Dotan said, I have been coming here almost daily for a long time and will do so. Just have to post comments as often too, thanx Martin.
Hello, and merry christmas… I won a license for a software but I was and still will visit this site everyday anyway… :)
Did I missed the giveaways for NOD32
It was an good idea! Nice Tools! I wish all a merry christmas and a happy new year!
It was a very good idea and there were many different kind of programs. It was exciting to participate almost every day.
Maybe there will be more luck to win a license next year. Thanks
Merry X-mas
