Ghacks Christmas Giveaway: Fast Picture Viewer

Day 21 of the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway. Hope you all ordered your Returnil Premium license, if not you can do so until January 2. Today’s giveaway is Fast Picture Viewer Professional which has no registration limit meaning that everyone who wants it gets it if they download and register the software today.

Fast Picture Viewer Professional was primarily designed for photographers, designer and editors to aid them in their daily work but its core functionality makes it interesting for most computer owners as well. As the name suggests the application is a fast picture viewer with a low memory footprint. Here is but one example for that.

A 2.17 Megabyte jpg image that is loaded into Fast Picture Viewer uses 9.6 Megabytes of computer memory and 12.6 Megabytes of virtual memory. The very same image makes XNView use 48.5 Megabytes of computer memory and 44.6 Megabytes of virtual memory.

The image file formats compatibility page lists the file formats that are currently supported by Fast Picture Viewer. It does make use of the Windows Imaging Component to ensure maximum file format compatibility.

There are a few basic groups that Fast Picture Viewer aims at:

Professional Photographers

  • Full Color Management with Profiled Monitor Support
  • Plug and Play Tethered Shooting
  • Adobe XMP Rating, Microsoft Photo Rating
  • Histogram and EXIF Info
  • Color-Managed Raw Preview
  • Sort on Date or GPS Time
  • Watched Folder Mode

Imaging Professionals

  • Unmatched Speed
  • Browse 100,000′s
  • Large Images Support
  • Saved Bookmarks
  • Multipage MTIFF Support
  • Custom Monitor Profiles
  • One Key Accept/Reject/Copy
  • Deep Subfolder Browsing

And of course the home user who wants a fast reliable image viewer for the images on his computer.

options

The program’s options contain several features that have to be enabled before they can be used. This includes one-key rating of images, single-keystroke labeling, multi-core support or how file operations like copying or moving are handled.

You will discover interesting and useful new functions all the time at the beginning. A click on the image count of the folder in the lower right corner will for instance display a slider that can be used to jump directly to another image with just two clicks of the mouse button.

Another example is the folder tracking feature which automatically scans selected folders – and subfolders – for new images displaying them as soon as they become available.

Fast Picture Viewer Professional is one of the fastest image viewers out there. Combined with its low memory footprint and professional features it is currently one of the best image viewers that is available for the Windows platform.

To get your copy head straight over to the download section and download the software. Then register the software with the following information. (Make sure to put the key in one line)

username: gHacks.net
key: LPmFPNAcSb4If92TCNGny9qrqLjGfRhz1=qf4C9F4qF=fiW+9SQP10zW9TJpewmPgzTKs8kYNEXb8lAly3fG

The key can be used to register the software so that it becomes the Pro version. This is working from Sunday 10:00 UTC to Monday 10:00 UTC.

So hurry up and let the software developer know what you think of his software.

Leave a note here if you grab the key, let us know what you think!

NB: XP users running under a “Limited” account must briefely start the app under an account with admin credentials, as the registration process writes a key under HKML, which is locked down for unpriviledged users (a good thing!)

  2. John says:

Amazing the amount of goodies you are sharing!,
One little question, what if I want to format my hd, and start with a fresh new install. Would I be able to register this software still, or is it now/today or never…???

  3. Axel says:

Hi John: the giveaway key is good only today, it’s not xmas everyday unfortunately :-)

If you use the key after tomorrow 10:00 UTC, you’ll get a 60-days trial instead.

    Enjoy!

  4. Pierro says:

Im a win xp user too – and i will try my luck here again .. If its possible, put me on the winner list ;)

  5. Oki Helfiska says:

Thanks for amazing software. Merry Cristmas

  6. Nicolai H says:

    I can’t download the pro-version :(
I can downliad the basic-version but its free :(

    It’s kinda stupid :(

  7. Jojo says:

I already have a nice collection of photo software but thought I would give this a try.

However, they don’t provide the ability to choose the folder that you want to install it in (I guess it defaults to C:\Program Files…), so I dumped it.

My standard location for software installation is on my D: or E: drives. I don’t want user software on my C: drive.

  9. garbanzo says:

i like this viewer! it’s very fast and minimalist, with some excellent features. histogram and info look very nice and are easy to read. all the keyboard shortcuts are well thought out, especially Enter to toggle full-size/fit-to-screen. very good idea!

right-click and left-click zoom with different zoom levels is also brilliant.

i’ve only installed it on my laptop, can’t wait to get home and try it out on my ‘good’ system where i can enable all the acceleration goodies :)

i do wish there were an option to fit the window to the image, that is how i prefer to work. or maybe there is such an option, but i’ve just missed it? there are lots of settings to play around with…

also, i don’t especially like the vista-style interface since i use XP, it would be better if it took on the system’s visual style. but it’s a minor complaint.

a tip – you have to press CTRL-R to enter the registration information. it took me a while to figure that out!

many thanks to Martin and to the developers of this great app for making it available to ghacks readers today. i’ll definitely be promoting this one!

  10. garbanzo says:

@ Jojo – don’t give up so quickly, this app is worth a look. from the FAQ:

Although not recommended, you can change the program’s default installation location by launching msiexec.exe with command-line parameters as follow:

    msiexec /i FastPictureViewer.msi INSTALLDIR=”D:\Programs\FastPictureViewer”

(replace the installation path with your destination folder of choice)

  11. Drew says:

Ok, maybe I am a little slow – but how do I register it after I download it?

  12. Tysen Woodlock says:

Nice offer, I’m going to give this a try.

  13. DivinoAG says:

I got a key for Fast Picture Viewer (courtesy of gHacks) earlier this year, I can tell you: I love the software.

It is fast and very flexible, with many advanced features that are very good for visual design professionals like me. I use it as the default image visualizer on my Vista machine and couldn’t be happier.

Actually I could. The only thing that I miss from the old WinXP picture viewer is the ability to rotate images permanently. But FPV is so many miles ahead of that viewer that I can live if this feature missing.

@Drew: you can see this info on the About window, but simply press Ctrl-R while the software is open to display the registration window.

  14. Thanks!
Loving this program, had to play with it! As a person who just got the Canon 50D digital, this is so much easier then downloading all the pictures from the CF :)

  15. Jonathan says:

Thanks for the key! I love this program!! I have tried other programs, but this seems to take it all!

  27. Mehdi S says:

I dont agree. I tried loading a large picture file taken with Canon EOS 40D…It loaded with 88Megs of RAM and 88 Megs of Virtual memory compared to FREEWARE faststone viewer (www.faststone.org)uses 57 MB RAM only and same amount of virtual memory.

  28. Bob Clark says:
