Welcome Jack. Glad to see a linux-head on board, hope to see the same level of impartial commentary I've been used to on the Windows front.

Cool! My comment was not posted and deleted...ho..wait...I was asking not to turn Ghacks in Slashdot and did not rave in hapiness...bad start considering the first article posted about how easy Linux is to install without mentioning any drawbacks or limitations.

Plz don't cover the open source ideology here, I see enough of that at other sites I visit and frankly it turns my stomach.

I'm more than happy to read your articles as long as you remember this is not a politial site it's a software site, lets keep it that way please!

Welcome Jack.

Out of frustration I've taken the leap (by proxy) and installed Ubuntu on my (computer unsavy) brother's notebook. The last two WinXP installations lasted less than 6 months before they were crippled by spyware / adware / virus / other nastys.

Searching the communities has yielded answeres to the annoyances that have come up (touchpad speed was the latest), but I've not been able to spend as much time researching "best practices" and guidelines.

I look forward to reading your comments and suggestions and learning from your experience!

RG you're a little rambler today, are you ;)

I have not explicitly mentioned it but everyone is free to submit tips, tricks, questions or requests and I usually do my best to post an article if they could interest other readers. So if you got something in mind contact me and we work something out.

Oh, and networking guys are expensive ;)

Seeing today's 'ask the readers' article and my own silly joke about networking made me wonder of something.
Martin have you had (I can't seem to remember) or have you thought about doing 'ask the readers' submitted by the readers themselves? Sorry for the off topic :)

Welcome jack and thanx. Linux is certainly one area that I really need to learn.
Now only if Martin also brought in a networking (router, switch, etc) writer it would be even better...just kidding

Hello Jack! Our family has been using Linux exclusively (Fedora and then Ubuntu) since October 2005, and dual booting for about a year before that.

What has attracted me to Ghacks was the great Firefox tips that we NOT simply repeats of everything already out there. I hope to see you post in a similar fashion about Linux: unique tips and software that are not covered in other websites. From reading other user comments here this site does not seem to be infected with the freetard Linux crowd and I personally would love to hear about both FOSS and closed source Linux applications. I am a KDE user so I hope to see some coverage of that desktop.

If I may be the first to suggest an app to review, then take a look at Zim. Zim is a personal wiki, or a hierarchal notes manager. It really has changed the way I organize my life, and that was after chasing literally tens of notes managers across three operating systems.

Welcome to gHacks!! Will be really looking forward to your posts and I am now a "dual booter". I am trying to get away from Winblows totally.....except for when i want to a game. Would love to see Linux be able to do the gaming as well, but, that is a game developers problem.
 Again, Welcome aboard!
