It’s Linux time at gHacks!

Hello gHacks faithful. My name is Jack Wallen and I am here to give you the gift of Linux. Appropos seeing as how it’s the holiday season. Let me explain…I have been brought on board gHacks to write about Linux. Why? Because Linux is the future of computing…or at least that is what my soapbox has painted (in shiny gold leaf) across all sides.

Seriously though…

I have been writing about Linux for over ten years. I have had published thousands of articles covering Linux and open source. My plans here at gHacks will begin with helping the new Linux user (or the Windows user wanting to switch) easily migrate from Windows to Linux. As I tackle this cause I will sprinkle into the mixture some more advanced topics to keep those accustomed to Linux interested. I will introduce you to software you never knew about, desktops that will wow you, and the open source ideology that has been my war cry for over a decade.

I hope you will enjoy my articles here at gHacks. If you have any suggestions (or requests) please feel free to drop me a line via email.

Welcome to GHacks Jack. I’ve been using Ubuntu for about 5 months now and it’s what I use when I blog. I’m really looking forward to your articles and finding out what else I can do with Linux.

  2. Martin says:

Welcome Jack. I think this will be really interesting ;)

  3. rubing says:

Now, I have a reason to read Ghacks again!

  4. Specter1981 says:

Welcome, looking forward to your posts.

  5. Yogi says:

Welcome Jack – I’m looking forward to reading your articles.

  6. Genisis says:

Welcome to gHacks!! Will be really looking forward to your posts and I am now a “dual booter”. I am trying to get away from Winblows totally…..except for when i want to a game. Would love to see Linux be able to do the gaming as well, but, that is a game developers problem.
    Again, Welcome aboard!

  7. jack says:

Thank you all. Again I want to say to send me the topics you most want to read/learn about. I am going to start with some “newbie” content and advance from there.

  8. Dotan Cohen says:

Hello Jack! Our family has been using Linux exclusively (Fedora and then Ubuntu) since October 2005, and dual booting for about a year before that.

What has attracted me to Ghacks was the great Firefox tips that we NOT simply repeats of everything already out there. I hope to see you post in a similar fashion about Linux: unique tips and software that are not covered in other websites. From reading other user comments here this site does not seem to be infected with the freetard Linux crowd and I personally would love to hear about both FOSS and closed source Linux applications. I am a KDE user so I hope to see some coverage of that desktop.

If I may be the first to suggest an app to review, then take a look at Zim. Zim is a personal wiki, or a hierarchal notes manager. It really has changed the way I organize my life, and that was after chasing literally tens of notes managers across three operating systems.

  9. RG says:

Welcome jack and thanx. Linux is certainly one area that I really need to learn.
Now only if Martin also brought in a networking (router, switch, etc) writer it would be even better…just kidding

  10. RG says:

Seeing today’s ‘ask the readers’ article and my own silly joke about networking made me wonder of something.
Martin have you had (I can’t seem to remember) or have you thought about doing ‘ask the readers’ submitted by the readers themselves? Sorry for the off topic :)

  11. Martin says:

RG you’re a little rambler today, are you ;)

I have not explicitly mentioned it but everyone is free to submit tips, tricks, questions or requests and I usually do my best to post an article if they could interest other readers. So if you got something in mind contact me and we work something out.

Oh, and networking guys are expensive ;)

  12. RG says:

/me either too quiet or rambling :D

    Thanx Martin

  13. Ken says:

    Welcome Jack.

Out of frustration I’ve taken the leap (by proxy) and installed Ubuntu on my (computer unsavy) brother’s notebook. The last two WinXP installations lasted less than 6 months before they were crippled by spyware / adware / virus / other nastys.

Searching the communities has yielded answeres to the annoyances that have come up (touchpad speed was the latest), but I’ve not been able to spend as much time researching “best practices” and guidelines.

I look forward to reading your comments and suggestions and learning from your experience!

  14. Roman ShaRP says:

    Welcome Jack!

I’m one of those who is preparing to move, and started experimenting with Ubuntu on virtual machine. I’m looking forward to interesting articles too. :)

  15. BRasulov says:

    Hope ull like ur readers:)

  16. techandlife says:

    Hi Jack,

I’m a Ubuntu newbie and am looking forward to your posts.

  17. Womble says:

Plz don’t cover the open source ideology here, I see enough of that at other sites I visit and frankly it turns my stomach.

I’m more than happy to read your articles as long as you remember this is not a politial site it’s a software site, lets keep it that way please!

  18. Marc says:

Cool! My comment was not posted and deleted…ho..wait…I was asking not to turn Ghacks in Slashdot and did not rave in hapiness…bad start considering the first article posted about how easy Linux is to install without mentioning any drawbacks or limitations.

  19. Tigsfan says:

Hey Jack, look forward to reading your linux articles. I was curious, what Linux Distro (s) are you running?

  20. dahamsta says:

Welcome Jack. Glad to see a linux-head on board, hope to see the same level of impartial commentary I’ve been used to on the Windows front.

    adam

  21. marcelo says:

hello and welcome.. :) I’ve used linux before but don’t use it now as my office is using windows. I would love to hear news about the linux world.. :)

  22. Dotan Cohen says:

Where is the Linux Tips link in the header? To go along the Windows Tips and Firefox Tips.

  23. MartinJB says:
