Ghacks Christmas Giveaway: MediaMonkey Gold

It is already the third day of the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway and the responses have been great so far. Both the Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 post and the Newsbin / Giganews post got heaps of comments. The lucky winners of the five Newsbin Pro licenses and the five Giganews Diamond account winners will be notified by email later today.

Today’s giveaway is another popular software program. MediaMonkey Gold is an all in one music management solution. The MediaMonkey team provide a free version of their software with limited (but still extensive) features.

At its core is the ability to list all audio files of a computer system. The first step after the installation is the scan of parts – or all – of the computer’s storage devices. Music that is discovered that way will be automatically archived in various categories according to their tags. All files without tags will be moved into unknown folders.

Music is sorted by various parameters in the library including location, title, artist, genre or rating. Parameters can be removed or added to the library with a right-click on the item and the selection of Options > Choose Tree Nodes. The very same menu contains options to add or remove sortable columns which are used to display the music in the main panel.

The program layout makes it pretty easy to find specific music of the collection. The libraries and the main panel can be used to sort the music quickly. The search on the other hand is pretty fast as well which makes it the best option to find that one track that you are looking for.

Probably one of the first things that a new user will be doing is to make sure that his music collection is tagged properly. MediaMonkey comes with extensive means of tagging and cleaning a music collection. Options include automatically tagging from the web, tagging from information that the filename provides, synchronizing tags and cleaning them.

mediamonkey

Music can also be tagged manually in the extensive tag editor. MediaMonkey comes with an auto-organizer that can rename the music collection with the help of selected tags.

Other features include:

  • Easy Playlist creation with the ability to create automatic mixes
  • Record, convert and burn music
  • Build in Podcast Catcher
  • Party mode
  • Sync with iPhones, iPods, and most any MP3 phone or Audio Device
  • Visualizations
  • Statistics

MediaMonkey Gold adds several interesting new features to those of the free version. It provides the possibility to create multiple music collections which comes in handy if multiple users share a computer or if you want to keep music separated from each other.

Other features include a file monitor which will automatically monitor locations on the hard drive for new music. advanced auto playlists (create 256 Megabytes of music that match the following criteria), auto-conversion and leveling, cataloging physical music CDs, a sleep timer and more.

MediaMonkey can be extended with addons in various categories like visualization, DSP or devices much like Winamp or other music players.

Five free copies of MediaMonkey Gold have been donated and are up for grabs. If you want to win them write a comment. It would be nice if you would tell us what tool – or set of tools – you are currently using to manage your music collection.

  1. Gemini says:

Right now I use foobar2000 and songbird for my music collection, I haven’t gotten a chance to try out mediamonkey yet, but this would be a great opportunity.

  2. Kim Allen says:

Does this get as fiddly when transfering to an iphone as winamp does?

  3. WCS.Tony says:

I use MediaMonkey (free) and find it invaluable at searching for songs.

It can even find duplicate songs!

The Gold Version would allow me to try out the many advanced features of this software.

  4. vamshi says:

I use winamp for music collection.

  5. Grissino says:

I use MediaMonkey standard (free version). I have also Winamp installed.

  6. Sarah T says:

Will be trying out the free version. So much music so little time to sort it

  7. Esilenna says:

I currently use iTunes, and I’m getting a little frustrated with it.

  8. david says:

i used to use Winamp religiously for years but got over its buggyness and alternated between winamp and windows media player. For some reason i really thought Itunes was going to be the Shiznit of media managers but i was extermely dissappointed with it. Big download, installs extra crap and services, is super slow at syncing music over LAN, the list goes on.

Main reasons i use media monkey:

    - Can sync with ipod touch 2g with the latest firmware. (Not sure how many others can do that.)
    - Sick of the slow speed of itunes to simply sync music.
    - Lack of format support in itunes. mediamonkey can play everything i have MP3, OGG, FLAC.
    - It has a folder monitor, so you tell it to monitor certain folders and any additions, removals, modifications to any tags or filen are reflected in your mediamonkey db
    - Lotsa different built in views and highly customizable interface with search as you type
    - Can scrobble with last.fm (not built in natively).
    - Able to play music directly from my ipod through the computer. This is awesome for work where i don’t want to sync any music to my work pc i can just play it straight from the ipod. Or you could just sync podcasts at work without any problems.

I does a whole lot more to automate stuff but my music collection is in pretty good knick thats to MP3TAG so i didn’t actually get to try those features.

Notes: Does not play video at all, only does music so it is not a complete media manager. Mediamonkey also has the ability to run certain scripts and has different skins but i dont use them so i can’t really comment other then they can be pretty useful for people with messy music collections.

    Overall i love mediamonkey.

  9. Zachary says:

I use Mediamonkey free currently. Best music player I have EVER used. I love it to death. Owning the pro version would be awesome.

  10. algy says:

Struggling with the new Songbird at the moment, which I’m trying as an alternative to Winamp. Both seem sluggish with large libraries – be keen to see how MM operates.

  11. Rupert says:

I use Helium Music Manager – the best music app out there I think. It’s just had a GUI re-design, and it has loads of interesting features.I already have a licence for Media Monkey Gold, so can I win something else? I was thinking of maybe a small house in the Bahamas?

  12. Ragflan says:

I use Banshee and Rhythmbox. But I love Songbird as well. I’ll be happy to give MediaMonkey a try. Thanks!

  13. garbanzo says:

oh boy, this just keeps getting better and better. i’ve been meaning to check this one out for a few weeks now after hearing about it so much. maybe now’s my chance :)

  14. Frode says:

Another nice one. In please. :)

  15. Zachary says:

    @Rupert

Wow, I just noticed the GUI upgrade for Helium and I must say it looks good. I used to use the app but MediaMonkey was much better for me. I’ll give the latest Helium a try.

  16. junior1zero says:

    using AIMP for music

  17. aamirullah says:

i am ussing windows media player, but i want try media monkey

  18. Quenstion says:

Do you just choose the winners randomly or what?

  19. manpig says:

    Here is my question:

do you just choose the winners randomly or what?

  20. aamirullah says:

i am using windows media player, but i want to use mediamonkey gold, if i win

  21. Stefan says:

I used a cracked version of MediaMonkey on a friend’s PC a while back and it converted me from a Winamp user – I got the free version as soon as I got home and have never switched. The fact that Foxytunes supports it is an added bonus, I’d love to win a copy of MM Gold

  22. Grobigou says:

    Nice !
I think I’m gonna try it.
Currently, i’m using iTunes or just VLC
    Grobigou.

  23. Scott says:

Hi – I’d love the Gold version (currently using the free version). I’m also using Songbird, and for tagging, I use Mp3tag (mp3tag.de).

  24. Anonymous says:

I use mainly Foobar but Media Monkey is a vey capable program, way better than WMP and ITunes.

  25. Raymond says:

    Sounds like a nice program.

    Ray

  26. Ryan says:

Currently using the free MediaMonkey, best audio tagging program I have used :)

  27. Mark says:

Ooh I like this. Kinda has the feel of a sane iTunes :P

  28. Alsiladka says:

    Could not have been better!!
Presently i use MediaMonkey along with some of the scripts from this wonderful collection fo MediaMonkey scripts – http://trixmoto.net/mm/scripts.php?id=1

Special mention to the album art tagger as it helps me replace, or tag an album art to the entire album in one go instead of each song.

Would love to get the gold edition :)

  29. Terry says:

I currently use the free version of MediaMonkey, Christmas really will have arrived if I win the Gold Version.

  30. Jacob says:

I’m using foobar2000 but would not say no to MediaMonkey Gold. :-)

  31. Amit Kapoor says:

    Hi,

I would like to get the Media Monkey Gold Edition. Currently, I am using both Windows Media Player & Media Monkey Free Edition. But I know that the Gold version is better in a few things. Thank you!

    Regards,
    AK

  32. Marco says:

currently I’m using SAM Broadcaster (DSP) and Winamp

  33. Pierro says:

    Sounds great – but first:
    some greets from germany :)

I use atunes for my music libary

  34. Ruan says:

Using iTunes at the moment – desperately looking at alternatives!

  35. Well…it is a good news indeed..getting some giveway for christmas will be great..

Guys, checkout my latest love at Cupid Blogger – http://www.cupidblogger.com

  36. pablog says:

I’m happy with iTunes. I just haven’t felt the need for something “better”.

  37. Amanda says:

I don’t know where I’d be without the “Monkey’ in my life :) Curious George is cute but MM never gets in trouble !

  38. subgrampus says:

Am currently using iTunes to manage my music.

  39. sebastian says:

    I will try it.

  40. Dmitrij says:

    I’m using WMP ;)

  41. Adam says:

I have been somewhat forced into iTunes because of the iPhone (I know there are alternative music managers, but iTunes makes it easiest), but use “The Godfather” for easy tagging (it tags based on filenames, syncs tags, renames files based on tags, etc).

I also use the free version of MediaMonkey to get album art (when iTunes can’t find it, which is often), and use MusicBrainz Picard for auto-tagging new files without any tag information.

Sounds complicated using all these tools, but I haven’t found a tool yet that does it all well.

  42. Stephane says:

This software is great! I’ve used the free version for a long time, just got the Gold version recently, if i win i’d donate the key to a friend, i know i can make some people happy with it :D

  43. Been using MM free edition for years now. Would love to get my hands on the pro version!!

  44. LethAL says:

I use foobar2000 and MusicBrainz Picard to sort out my collection, but I saw a friend who had MM and watched him configure its options for portable device synchronisation. That seems to be its killer feature.

I haven’t seen any other app that does semi-random rating-weighted (i.e. more 5 star songs) synchronisation, and it even lets you modify nearly all of the encoder properties (i.e. VBR V2 32 < ~160 < 192kbps)

    Truely awesome.

  45. Olli says:

For seperate tracks I usually use a lighter mp3 player, like foobar, but if I want to keep my library sorted and upload stuff to my portable mp3 player I usually use MM :) Features are nice and it’s quite reponsive, possibly the best of it’s kind on Windows (I rather use Amarok in Linux though).

  46. Marc says:

I’m using Jriver Media Jukebox 12 right now, the freeware edition. I’d like to try Media Monkey Gold!
Ghacks is great! I’m a daily visitor. Keep up the good work!
    Greetings from Antwerp, Belgium.

  47. albert says:

I’m still using Windows Media Player for managing my media collection :( I know, it’s a pain, and I’m kind of lazy to try out other media managers out there. Most just clutters my desktop and can’t really deliver what’s promised.

Hopefully, MediaMonkey will not require much of my time to manage my collection.

  48. Iravan says:

    Sometimes Windows Media Player

  49. Cecilia says:

I use Media Monkey because I love how easy it is to have everything organized with it :)

  50. deaddogsmoking says:

WMP for want of a better alternative, and the time to check them out :-/

  51. Leigh says:

I am currently using iTunes mainly for the ipod sync and podcast downloads.

  52. I’m trying to make Songbird obey me but it too unstable

  53. MerleOne says:

I mainly use iTunes 8, and used to rely on JetShell from iAudio/Cowon

  54. Skmez says:

I’ve basically tried them all from foobar, wmp, winamp, itunes, media monkey too, to name a few and i must say that it really stands out of all the rest with its capabilities, even its standard version which i use is loaded with so many features! I’ll really love it if i get the pro version features! :-)
p.s. Thanks for all these useful software giveaways with your regular dose of useful articles! :-)

  55. Tharkis says:

Ok I’ll throw my hat in for this one. I’ve always wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately my method of organizing my music consists of a bunch of folders. This looks like a better idea.

  56. Emil says:

    one of my personal fav

  57. Paul says:

    I use iTunes…and it blows.

  58. Sylvain Jette says:

This is a fantastic piece of software with so many features. In the ast I tried it and loved it however it cold not sync with the IPhone 3Gwhich it can now do. This is a big plus.

The features are endless and would consider purchasing a copy at this point.
    Great giveaway!!

  59. andygoose says:

Love MediaMonkey! It’s so great for auto-tagging and auto-organizing, especially when most of my music is downloaded from p2p. The only reason I have iTunes installed at all is for the girlfriend who won’t learn to use MM!

  60. Kaufman says:

I use the free version of MediaMonkey to help clean up my missing album art – I love how it can query amazon to fill in the missing information. I still have to use iTunes to handle iPod+Nike stuff. It would be nice to use only one program.

  61. codexx says:

    gimme!

  62. Gyshall says:

I’m using Foobar2000 right now, but have used MediaMonkey in the past… just not the Pro version.

  63. HNicolai says:

This program has a nice layout !

  64. Enigma says:

I am another for Foobar2000 as well, with every new version and with great community support Foobar2000 is the obvious choice. Especially with large music collections.

  65. paul says:

Would be ferry nice to win this for main music collection oranisation.

  66. Mario Filipe says:

    Gimme gimme gimme

  67. Smaga says:

    Count me in

  68. tom says:

im on winamp! but i want MM :)

  69. Wesley says:

This would be an excellent program. I need an iTunes alternative.

  70. BRasulov says:

i dont want MediaMonkey at all, just curious how lucky i am, hehe

  71. charles says:

i already use iTunes, but would like to have the better one. MM ;)

  72. rainer says:

right now using foobar2000, never found a better solution, but did not try mediamonkey by now.

  73. Philip says:

I currently use the free version of MM both for organizing/playing my ever-expanding music collection and for syncing my play lists with the Ipod and Iphone. It works flawlessly and seems to me much more robust than Itunes. The Gold version will surely be a step up :)

  74. Greg says:

I use winamp to play the music and the free version of mediamonkey for organization.

  75. Scott says:

After replacing the hard drive on my laptop I haven’t been able to bring myself to reload itunes, and I haven’t decided on a good replacement; so I live by what’s on my ipod alone.

  76. Vaibhav says:

I am using iTunes to manage music but it is very cumbersome and heavy. I would love to try MediaMonkey.

  77. Steve says:

This sounds great. I have used just folders to organize for so many years as someone who dates back to the DOS 3.1 days, and am looking to modernize my way of organizing music. This sounds like a GREAT tool!

  78. chris.c says:

This looks awesome. I would love to own a copy of this.

Currently, I use iTunes, as I’m an iPod touch 2.0 user. I also use Sharepod a good deal, to remove and add items from my nano and my girlfriend’s touch 1.0. I’ve tried using TuneUp to tag my files too…but I don’t like the fact that it is subscription based, nor do I like the fact that catalogs your hardware and only allows for an install one ONE machine. Oh and don’t bother using TuneUp on a virtual machine; it’s a nightmare.

  79. Steve says:

    count me in!

  80. Abbie Poole says:

I am using iTunes and WMP but this sounds much easier and faster. Might try and download the free version after reading this.

  81. frenky says:

So here goes my comment. I use MediaMonkey free edition for over a year and for me its the best media manager available, I tried all others (winamp, windows media player, songbird, etc) and all of them had some bugs or didnt have some options I like in Mediamonkey. Ill keep using it because I love it. The only thing that Im not satisfied is Autotag from web (they only have amazon, but should include discogs, cduniverse and other sources).
Probably I wont win the award but I tried at least.
    Greetings from croatia!
    Frenky

  82. Bill says:

I use WMP and iTune, I really don’t now this product, but I know I hate WMP and iTune.

    Hope I could win!

  83. Johan Gustavsson says:

Hello, I would really like to try out mediamonkey pro

  84. John says:

    Please… save me from iTunes!!!

  85. srini says:

    me too :)

  86. Sergey says:

    It is best media manager!

  87. andrew says:

I am using songbird at present after removing mediaplayer. I do like the plugins that are available for songbird but I find it rather slugish on my system especially when playing flac. Would love to get a hold of mediamonkey to improve my music experience.

  88. Dewer says:

A great organizer–finds ‘em and plays ‘em.

  89. PArahat says:

I use AIMP and JetAudio but want to try MM :)

  90. Lt. Dan says:

I refuse to load iTunes bloated crap on my pristine new computer. Therefore, my 30G iPod had been collecting dust on the bookshelf. Maybe I should be looking into MediaMonkey. I always thought that iPods were very picky about what software they work with. Shows what I know…

  91. DJ says:

I used to use iTunes, but the slowness with which it loads has turned me off. I now use VLC, which is a less-than-ideal solution for true music management.

  92. Cristina McDowall says:

not using anything ATM – leave all that to the kids!!

  93. Daniel Dale says:

I currently use musikcube and have been wanting to try Media monkey maybe I’ll get lucky lol

  94. Hannah says:

I confess to being stuck with WMP and iTunes – iTunes so that I can use the iPod (obviously – not used for anything else – plus thought I had to use this) and the rather frustrating WMP that I wish I could downgrade to a previous version. Biggest problem I have though is backing up everything. I use synctoy – but because WMP seems to edit every track constantly, synctoy just ends up overwriting every one and taking hours. My woes for the day anyway!

  95. Vanillaman says:

Emmm!! As always with Ghacks there doesn’t appear to be a “link” to download it. So, it obviously is NOT a giveaway at all. What’s the point???

  96. frido says:

At the moment I’m using iTunes to play music and sync it with my iPhone. I also use AIMP 2 as standard player, because it loads faster. MP3tag is invaluable to clean up badly tagged files.

I also have used Media Monkey before. It’s a fine mp3 managment tool. And way faster than iTunes …

  97. Amos says:

    Shotgun!

MediaMonkey is an absolutely fantastic program – even the free version – so yes, count me in, please!

  98. Tony says:

Cool. I am using iTunes right now, but I would like something less bloated.

  99. Florin C. says:

I am using the free version and is very good, i hope i will have the luck to win this one.Thank you !

  100. Matthias says:

I would love to have the Goldedition.
I’ve tried many programs, but one of the best is Media Monkey (I use the free editition)

  101. Arp says:

Aw man – why’d I have to win yesterday :-P

  102. OxfordRob says:

You would not believe the hassle I am having today at work and the only light at the end of this tunnel of drudgery and depression is the thought I could win some top software by relinquishing a bit of my frustration on a comments box. Oh my girlfriend is cooking me dinner tonight and so if I don’t win the software I still get some solace tonight :) Though winning would be nice.

  103. Andrew says:

If music be your food of love then this is a feast

  104. Stefan says:

I’ve tried MediaMonkey in the past, but as a long-time (as in ‘forver’) Winamp-user it just didn’t work out.
Right now I’m searching for ways to get my collection organized the way I want.. so hey, I’m in! ;)

  105. WhACKO says:

    I’m in for this one!

  106. mikey says:

I use mediamonkey free edition and I love it. I would appreciate the upgrade.

  107. IanG says:

walk the walk, talk the talk, keep the mercury rising

  108. comrade12 says:

I currently use foobar2000. I have also used songbird and liked it. I am interested in the tagging capabilities. I’m in.

  109. Brian says:

iTunes for managing and Tag N Rename for ID3 tagging.

  110. lightstalker says:

at the moment i use nothing and all my music has got incorrect tagging information so a tool like mediamonkey will be extremely useful.

in the past i used foobar but i then got an mp3 player and nearly never listen to music on my computer.ive tried mp3 tagging software but none of them seem to be as usefull as they make out to be.

  111. Doru says:

    Nice, 10x u m8

  112. techandlife says:

I currently use WMP so I’d love to try MediaMonkey Gold

  113. sarana says:

Foobar guy here, although lack of updates for Win 2000 was not cool. So here I am, what the heck, I’m in for MediaMonkey.

  114. Iskur says:

Sounds handy, I would love to try MediaMonkey GOld.

  115. Alex says:

MediaMonkey gold would rock… use free at the moment… along with winamp and aimp2.

  116. rmgifford says:

It would be a welcome improvement over the conglomeration of apps that I use to manage my media.

  117. august says:

    i haven’t tried media monkey….. hope i can win this…….

  118. Vin says:

Using free Media Monkey at the moment. Great media player. Very customizable. Tried most other media players, but always returned to Media Monkey eventually.

  119. Przemysław Tuszyński says:

I’m not using any soft like this, but that could change tomorrow.

  120. Katy H says:

I use iTunes at the moment. It makes me want to punch the screen quite frequently.

  121. Marie says:

I have been playing with the trial version of Media Monkey, which I love because it doesn’t have the memory leakage of iTunes. The extensibility is just a bonus!

  122. Rudy says:

Would love to switch from iTunes

  123. Colin says:

This is like hitting the jackpot! Would you believe I haven’t any music manger on my computer ! Now I have two Hard Drives and finding what I want is a time consuming effort, I’m not a organized with my ever growing music collection.

I have a hobby I make sideshows and upload them to “Daily Motion” I try to match the music up with the photography, and make the slide show look like a small movie, Media Monkey would prove a big help !

I have put a link to my video creations !

  124. Doc says:

I’d like to try MediaMonkey Gold!

  125. yooman says:

    great program

  126. Kao Vang says:

Im currently using the simplistic MusikCube and Amarok for ubuntu. Would love to try this feature rich monkeymedia. :)

  127. Grubee says:

I never know whats better than Winamp…. if anything is?

  128. mickay says:

Great software. I have been using free edition of Media Monkey for half a year now.

  129. Dotan Cohen says:

Wow, this looks like an expensive clone of Amarok, the free KDE Music Manager.

  130. DawnLouise Metcalf says:

Fingers crossed today! :) Good luck everyone! :)

  131. Darryl says:

Hello – I currently am using multiple programs trying to get comfortable with one but have yet to find one! I would love MM Gold as it sounds like it could be THE program for me :)

    Darryl.

  132. Dan says:

    I’m in!

  133. Paul says:

Currently using regular MediaMonkey for tagging, with AIMP for simple playback, or Songbird for jukebox and music blog browsing.

  134. AWz says:

I’m currently using the free version. And I like it… It rocks in music-management/tagging.

  135. Adam says:

I use to use WinAMP religiously years ago but got tired of it being so bloated and moved on. I’m now using a mixture of VLC, iTunes and Floola. When on the go I use PodPlayer. I have played with MediaMonkey quite awhile ago but haven’t since it would be a pleasure to have the Gold edition to play around with and then provide my experience and thoughts on my blog.

  136. barney_gl says:

All well and good … but why did they have to name it Media*Monkey*?!? Have you ever heard a monkey in full voice? Cacophonous would be an understatement .

  137. Nathan says:

I don’t currently use any program to organise my music – they are all just dumped in one folder sorted by name

  138. Masu says:

As of yesterday, I used itunes.
THen I switched to WMP 11, but its not quite the same (basically WMP sux).
iTunes stopped working properly for me, so ever since, I have been looking for something new. I tried songbird, but this look so much more promising!

  139. Marcelo says:

Well, I use the MediaMonkey Free version, but I will try the new Songbird 1.0 release… Hell, if I get one of these MM Gold, I’ll forget about Songbird for a while…

From Chile, a reader who is very happy with your blog.

  140. slimbadguy says:

ever since musicmatch jukebox got screwed up by yahoo–i’ve been trying different programs–this is the best

  141. GoOrange says:

I’ve been using the free version of MediaMonkey lately and it blows away everything else. I’ve tried foobar, songbird, winamp, and itunes, but Media Monkey seems like the best.

  142. bffffff says:

i used musikcube and looked at songbird in its early days (it’s final now), but nothing impressed me like mediamonkey. i am using the standard free edition right now and it’s excellent. i am thinking on purchasing for a long time, would be nice, if i got lucky ;)

I’ve tried foobar (nice, but a bit too complicated to skin), aimp and winamp as a main player and now use xmplayer in combination with changing tag scanner + edit programs. songbird just takes too damn long to load. would love to try full version of mm :)

  144. cicom3nd3z says:

Count me in, MM free can’t auto-update the library and it doesn’t have advanced auto-playlists…

  145. giglmania says:

  174. John says:

I LOVE MediaMonkey! I have used a variety of other programs, but nothing comes close, especially once you add in the scripts that so many have contributed. I originally used EAC and LAME to convert all of my CDs to mp3. I used the updated standard-alt to get a variable bitrate of about 192. Once I found mediamonkey, I completely organized and cleaned up my collection (it’s damn near perfect now) and MM was the key! One of the best programs ever… I ran across this looking for a coupon or someway to get it just a bit cheaper.
