Ghacks Christmas Giveaway: Newsbin Pro

Today is the second day of the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway and I’m really excited about the event so far. The Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 offer received hundreds of comments and the lucky winners will be notified today. Please make sure to spread the word about the event so that it will be a success for everyone.

Today’s giveaway is one of the few software products that I have bought. I usually rely on free software but this one is in my opinion the best of its kind. Newsbin Pro is a binary newsreader. It handles downloads from the Usenet. I really do not want to get into details about the Usenet in this thread, only this much: You do need access to a Usenet server to work with Newsbin Pro. One reliable (and many say the best) Usenet provider is Giganews which I use for several years as well.

The Newsbin Pro client has been developed over years and several useful features have been added to it. But first things first. If you start the Usenet client for the first time you have to add a Usenet server and some groups of that server to the client. The useful options begin right at this stage by providing SSL support, slave and fill servers and header compression. The maximum amount of connections can be configured during server setup as well.

Groups can be added in the Groups > Add Groups menu. The client will download all groups available on the server and provides filters to find the desired groups easily.

The interface can be customized beyond what is usually possible. All window elements can be positioned for maximum screen estate. Newsbin Pro uses tabs to display the additional data. The bottom window can for instance contain the download queue, downloaded files, failed files, status, thumbnails (if you are downloading images) and more. That’s very efficient because everything is accessible in the main interface.

Newsbin Pro provides access to several features that reduce the work of the user. It includes for example automatic rar and par processing, split-file processing, automatic header updates, extensive options to sort downloads into folders, support of mp3 id3v2 tags, an image viewer and download prioritization.

It obviously supports the common features of Usenet clients like nzb integration, speed limits, extensive filters and ban options.

Support is fast and good. I did encounter problems after moving from one computer to another but they were quickly solved by the support team and the crowded forum. Linux users will be happy to know that the forum has a Linux section as the client is apparently running fine under Wine. Windows users with 32-bit or 64-bit editions of 2000, XP or Vista will also be able to run the software.

Five licenses for Newsbin Pro are up for grabs. All you need to do is reply in the comments. It would be nice if you would mention your current Usenet provider and client that you are using and what you think of them.

Update: The guys at Giganews spotted the post and are sponsoring five one month Diamond accounts. These accounts will be given to five additional users who commented on the thread.. Please note that you need to signup at Giganews and mail me their Giganews username which I pass on to make sure that they do not pay for the first month (there is no obligation to after that month). You should also note that you need to be at least 18 years of age to signup for the account.

I use newsbin pro today – I bought it more than 6 years ago. It’s good and reliable and works fine with my giganews account

  4. treb says:

    exellent piece of soft!

  6. arnie Palmer says:

I think your site is one of the most interesting I have ever encountered and Newsbin is the best newsreader I have ever used. Please let me win a key so my brother will finally sign up for newsbin.
    Thanks

Ho, hard to say something about an application I just started to try. So what I’ve read about it, it should be worth a try…

Until now I used to have Usenext as my provider, but there are several problems on downloading and retention, so I decided to try another provider, which is now Astraweb (with the same conditions like GigaNews, but for half the price).

Because Usenext has it’s own proprietary client, I had to change this, too. And so my choice is NewsBin. Lets go and try…

  8. lily says:

using earthlink cable for usenet access…hopefully i am deemed worthy for a license

  9. Lance says:

great contest, i use my isp as provider for news groups and would love to try a new version of this software

  10. sonypsx says:

    NewsBin!

    The ultimative newreader…
Its like a Swiss knife and a Leatherman together.
It does not suffer from “featureitis” but has very useful options like ID3V2 TTag reading.
Also have no headache about some damaged files because of the wonderful “Autopar” tool.

This newsreader is simply a go!

  11. Rmack987 says:

I have been using Newsbin Pro for a very long time and have tried more than my share of usenet programs. Newsbin Pro is by far the best!!
I use my ISP’s newsserver and Usenetserver.com. They have a good retention and completion, also tried other providers and seem to return to usenetserver. Definately recommend using newsbin pro, well worth the money for a lifetime key. (very useful info: free usenet search engine (“http://www.binsearch.info/”)) Have Fun!!

  12. Daniel Ream says:

I have used NewsBin Pro under 32-bit and 64-bit WIndows and have always been happy with the product. I use Usenet.net and Easynews.com as my NNTP ISPs and have always been happy with the combination. While Usenet has lower retention than other NSPs, They have less spam and better network throughput.

NewsBin’s rapid release cycle, powerful feature set, and just-does-everything-automatically extras would keep me upgrading even if upgrades *weren’t* free for life.

  13. Bob Loblaw says:

Newsbin is the best Usenet app out there by far. If you like music, video, & porn then there is no better way to get it that Newsbin!

    (I wanna win a key!!)

  14. essjay says:

Ive tried all the others way back when and i have to say Newsbin has evolved into an even better product . i found it to be the most userfriendly of the readers and it continues to be so. Yes there are free ones and some are quite good if you like to muck about, i dont.
set it and forget it. I hope rapdishite et all die a horrible and timely death. long live usenet.

  15. Aarif says:

I use Grabit with EasyNews. Both awsome.

  16. poonany says:

Best usenet software out there. Been a registered user for MANY years. Highly recommend it.

  17. Joseph says:

Haven’t tried usenet out in years, but it is worth another look apparently.

  18. johnny kanux says:

What do you need to offer for me to buy and/or register your product?
    1. Make it reasonably priced (check)
    2. Design it with ease of use (check)
    3. Offer good support (honestly, cant answer this one as i have never required support for this product)
Those are the only criteria I ask of my software. As such, I have been a registered user for a few years now. I have tried others both before and since registering but when I am using my ‘Windows’ box, I always go back to what for me is tried and true. Newsbin Pro’s focus is Usenet, and specifically ‘the bins’. That is what it does, and does well. The program has plenty of options and is highly yet easily configurable. No doubt the recipient(s) of the free keys will no doubt be pleased. Should I be lucky enough to be given a key, the spirit of giving will surely continue as I know of a few that would be grateful to find a key in their stocking come Christmas day.

  19. the q says:

    Newsbin is the BEST
this thing is better than sliced bread!
Man THANK YOU GOD for allowing us to have newsbin and all news groups

  20. Yaza says:

Newsbin is definitely the fastest and most efficient binary news “reader” (downloader) that I have encountered.

  21. BJ says:

Have been using NewsbinPro for years. It is the best IMHO. It is well worth the price of admission. Using newshosting.com

  22. RevRagnarok says:

I am also a huge fan of the Giganews/Newsbin combo! I’ve been using GN for many many years, I have a grandfathered account of $100/yr 100GB max.

  23. wintermute23 says:

I use it of the most of several newsreaders.

My only complaint is that their online help-wiki is incomplete & the whole discussion on header management is a bit confusing.

  24. Oedi says:

I have been a giganews user for almost 10 years and can not beet them for retention, completeness and speed. It cost a bit more but well worth the money. As for Newsbin I have been using for about as long and there is nothing better out there. With the addition of NBZTV you live is easy you just need to show up and watch your download. I am using both right now while surfing.

  25. Eby says:

Well I’m using this very goog program with easynews and it never let me down. Even the betas where near perfection andnow with some new features we will get an even more well programmed piece of very good and cheap software.
Thanks for all who med this happen.

  26. John Ray says:

Love the program and all the features. I would be hard pressed to replace it!

  27. slimbadguy says:

i have a friend who uses newsbin pro/giganews

    he loves it

  28. Kao Vang says:

    pick me!

  29. phil G says:

Hello all -first I’d like to say NEWSBIN is the best reader out there – tried a few other but NEWSBIN works excellently, is fast and the development team is first rate in keeping users up to date on teh next beta or feature that is coming out. I use easynews, which is good but doesn’t have the long term archive that giganews supports. Sounds like a best of breed combo to bring both together. Thanks in advance!
