Then you are safe to remove emails. The reason why you don't use a new one instead, is that it is hard to transfer all the settings to new GMail account. Also if you have already disclose the old email address already, it will be trouble to inform your friends again for the changes. I use Gmail Drive and I use it for those kind of things, backing up my stuff, I wish I have a space on google servers, with at least 100 mb per file, so I dont need to split things in 20 mb ( gmail attachment).
