ZoneAlarm Forcefield Free

ZoneAlarm is running a promotion today that allows everyone to grab a free copy of their new ZoneAlarm Forcefield product if they register an account at the ZoneAlarm website. ZoneAlarm forcefield puts a protective layer around the browser. In other words it uses software virtualization / sandbox technology that is known from Sandboxie or SafeSpace.

Although the promotion is only running today users who download the virtualization software have seven days to install it and are still eligible to use it freely. The registration key will be send to the email address entered during registration and is good for one year of free updates.

Zonealarm Forcefield is compatible to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7 as well as Mozilla Firefox 2 and Firefox 3. No Opera support in sight unfortunately though.

ZoneAlarm Forcefield adds a toolbar to the browser which thankfully can be shortened so that the icons only appear in the statubs bar and are thus less obtrusive.

Features:

  • Browser Threat Immunity
  • Keylogger & Screengrabber Jamming
  • Anti-Phishing
  • Spy Site Blocking
  • On-The-Fly Encryption
  • Website Safety Check

Unlike the other two virtualization software programs ZoneAlarm Forcefield virtualises only the browser and not other applications that connect to the Internet.

No 64 bit support for this type of virtualization though with any of these products :( Made me sad when I installed Vista 64x and found out SandBoxie wouldn’t work.

  2. Pranav says:

Thanks Martin i really wanted to check this out

  3. kainen says:

i tried to use it but it brings my computer to a crawl

  4. Dante says:

I’ve gotten the free offer in email. But I’m totally clueless as to why I need this. What is so great about it? (I’m not saying this to be sarcastic, I just don’t understand what it does.)

  5. I saw it reviewed in one of my free mags the other day and figured I’d give it a try, but it wouldn’t let me run FF2 (I stll haven’t gone back to FF3 yet to see if all my ext’s work yet). Anyway, as you say yourself, it shoulda…

I didn’t need it anyway. If there’s something on my box, it’s down in the roots where I can’t find it :-)

  6. Martin says:

Dante it basically executes the browser in a virtual space meaning that it cannot affect the system. It made first place in a test that I read recently about virtualization software programs.

  7. Dante says:

Ah.. Now it becomes clear. Thanks Martin.

  8. Rarst says:

This reminds me of one short story:

” I had run trojan in Linux under Wine to have fun. :) And it had stolen password from ICQ running under Wine. :( ”

This sums up my thoughts on security by virtualizing. Good firewall+good antivirus are a must. Rest is mostly weird stuff trying to find niche where there is none.

  9. Dante says:

Just gave this a whirl. Sucks. It interferes too much. Websites, including this one requires multiple clicks in order to get in. And newsgroups definitely gets interfered with.

  10. Dante says:

Just tried it. Gives me a load of connection issues with websites, including this one. And found out it’s not really running in a virtual sandbox. Files downloaded still gets written into real subdirectories.

Whoops. Just saw my first attempt to write to this comment site. Farcefield blocked the repost and made me think the post didn’t go thru.

  11. dwarf_toss says:

Well, it is free. :D Within a years worth of updates it should get some kinks worked out.

    Heads up appreciated.

  12. dwarf_toss says:

Although I much prefer Comodo firewall to anything made by checkpoint. ZA hasn’t been right since they took over/switched names if you ask me.

  13. 22bad4u says:

Hi I just got Forcefield an I’m having difficulty accessing facebook. Keeps telling me I have incorrect browser version yet was fine earlier in day prior to getting ZA’s Forcefield. This is in IE7 & Firefox 3. Also tested it with Forcefield turned off. Still cannot access.

    Anyone else suffering difficulties
