Rapidshare finally decided to get rid of the Captcha images that were displayed to non-registered users who tried to download a file from the file hoster. Many users had problems to identify the correct characters that were shown in the Captcha to proceed with the file download. The reason for the change of heart is unknown but maybe it was the user protests that made them change their minds.
This makes Rapidshare easier to use for free users. On the downside the maximum file transfer speed has been reduced to 500 Kilobit, yes that’s bit not byte, which usually means longer download times.
Premium users still face the 10 Gigabytes per day limit but unused bandwidth is carried over to the next day up to a maximum of 50 Gigabytes.
Getting rid of the captchas was definitely the right move to unclutter the website and reduce the amount of complaints about the service. The speed limit won’t really affect many users. Power users will use Premium accounts and everyone else will have the patience to wait for the downloads to finish anyway.
