Back to the old Theme for now

I experienced some difficulties with the new theme for Ghacks and decided to revert back to the old theme for now until they are sorted out. The major problem for me was that somehow my Google Adsense earnings were cut in half. Now the strange thing about that was that the impressions of the Adsense unit were halved which definitely cannot be right. It could be that Google is having reporting issues and that those fell in line with the theme change which would be very unfortunate.

More likely though is that not all ad impressions are served in that theme which could either mean that I was hacked and someone else was making use of the other 50% of my impressions or that the theme was not delivering them properly to some browsers. I’m still investigating and hope that everything will turn back to normal with the old theme.

This would at least tell me that the new theme was somehow responsible for the drop. Just wanted to give you the heads up why the old theme is suddenly showing up again.

i like the old one more. guess its a matter of habit

A thing that attract my attention was that in the new theme under the “advertise here” picture there was a big empty place. I think somewhere until where you now see the “sponsor” title in the sidebar. I was wondering why nothing was there. Maybe an adsense tower ad was not displayed?

Rruben that was a different ad block, not related to Adsense. I installed the theme on a smaller site and will try to figure out what was going on there.

Old theme is better :P Orange hurts my eyes ;]

I prefer this “older” theme too.

  6. Martin, I am facing a similar situation. Since last 2 days my adsense impressions are 50% low. Infact the page impressions are 50% less then the pageviews shown in analytics stats, which definitely means something is wrong.

I am investigating the matter too. Although my wordpress doesn’t seem to be hacked but I am checking. I’d also like to tell ya that it may not be a problem with your theme. It could be adsense reporting problem or WP hacked.

Please do let us know when you’ve found a solution. Here’s a link which can help you in your investigation: http://ocaoimh.ie/2008/06/08/did-your-wordpress-site-get-hacked/

I prefer the old theme for what its worth – I must admit I dont see ANY ads in either.

    I <3 Firefox :D

I join to the other pals above: I prefer this theme, too.

FWIW, now that I’ve used both old and new, I find the old easier on my eyes to read. I don’t think I’m biased by familiarity because I normally immediately embrace change when the new is an improvement for me over the old.

I don’t remember seeing *why* you wanted to make a change. Would you share that (again)?

    old theme ftw

  11. Doc says:

    I can’t see any ads…I guess there’s something really wrong…

  12. Martin says:

Bill I’m much like a woman who just wants to change her husband in a perfectly fine relationship because she “thinks” it will be even better in the end.

    There is no reason :)

To be honest, I like this theme way better. The color scheme is memorable, and the text is much, much easier to read. I do most of my reading within NetNewsWire, but sometimes I visit the site (particularly when I need to find an old article, or when I want to comment on something).

If, in the end, you switch away from this theme, it would be really nice if you could move things around a bit. Maybe increase font sizes.

This is coming from a guy in his mid-twenties…so it’s not like my eyesight is going. :)
