Open Multiple Bookmarks in Firefox at once

In the last days I have been looking for a Firefox extension that would make it possible to open multiple bookmarks (and History items) at once. What I mean with this is that I wanted something like the CTRL left-click in Windows Explorer that lets you pick several files at once. My main problem was that the bookmarks menu collapsed as soon as I picked on bookmark that I wanted to load.

I sometimes however would like to load several bookmarks at once, or in rapid succession, and the collapsing bookmarks menu was annoying for that purpose. I did ask the question at the Firefox Mastery website because I knew that some clever Firefox geeks would frequent it and if someone would know the answer they would.

My own research was not successful but a few hours after posting the question over at the website Alex answered and pointed me to two extensions that would prevent the menu from collapsing when middle-clicking items.

  • middleclicknocollapse is a Firefox extension for Firefox 1.5 and 2.x that prevents the menus from collapsing while middle-clicking.
  • Stay Open Menu is the pendant for Firefox 3.

I hope that these two extensions will be helpful for some of you, I know that they are very helpful for me. (thanks Alex again)

martin, can we change firefox behavior. by default click bookmark will open in current tab, can we change it to be open in new tab?

You know that you can open all bookmarks inside an folder with just an middleclick on that folder?

Faizal: Yes just middle-click on a bookmark to do that.

Salz: Yes i know that but it removes all currently open tabs and loads all bookmarks in that folder. I want to select a few bookmarks without having to open the menu multiple times.

that can be done with mouse, when using laptop without mouse, there is no middle click.

There’s an extension called All-In-One-Sidebar that leaves the Bookmarks open, as well as displaying other cool stuff like history; downloads; extensions and themes; display website/source code/about: information; and page info.

If you tend to open the same bookmarks regularly try out the Morning Coffee extension available via add-ons/GetExtensions in Firefox. Kind of like having a butler bring you your newspapers in the morning. A “must have” if you’re a regular reader of some sites (like this one!).
