		<description>I use SMPlayer too but I don't have the additional codecs installed. Till date, I haven't had any trouble playing files. Methinks that these codecs are probably really obscure and I may never find a file that needs them.</description>

Concerning SMPlayer which I use myself, I have found an interesting pack, "a full package of MPlayer for Windows and the MPUI front-end.", which includes, in that one pack, all codecs, MPlayer as well as SMPlayer, enabling you to choose between MPlayer and SMPlayer for the front-end. Works fine, regularly updated :
