Yeah, one of these defraggers which I recognize is really ancient, like a poster above mentioned. Defrag technology has moved on quite a bit since the sizes of both drives and files have exploded in the last couple of years.

Obsolete 4 or 5 year old defraggers will not work with Vista, and more importantly they will still have to be run manually or scheduled even on XP. I have 1.4 TB of drives in my photoediting rig, and I'd guess that the old manual defraggers would take their own sweet time, rendering the system unusable for long periods. That's why I use an intelligent background auto defragger (yes, paid for, but totally worth it) on that rig.

Now, if somebody started giving away (legally!) freely some of the newer automatic defragmenters, I'd be the first to sign up, ads or no ads, lol.

<3 Ashampoo Defrag, been using it for long and have been very satisfied with it. I actually use numerous apps from Ashampoo since they have a good approach to their customers by often offering older versions of their apps for free etc. Their apps usually aren't high-end sort of software but are still worth using. Thanks for the nice list.

I think the old O&O Defrag v4 is still much better than Windows defrags. I don't know about the other stuff.

It's not older... It's more like ancient versions. :) I think system mechanic 6 was around late win98 times. I can't even remember OO defrag v4... Current is v10.

It's mostly dumb advertising (these magical "we are giving you this fo FREE" words) and such giveaways are of very little use (they are usually inferior even to modern freeware ones).
