Version number are of the form [lastNumberOfYear].[month]

The codename are two words with the same first letter... from the 4th version of Ubuntu this letter are incremented at each version (see the table in this link)

The Version is Year.Month, so Hardy is Version 8.04. The next Version will be 8.10, guess when it comes out ;-)

The Name? i don't know where it comes from, but i think it is definitely needed. You can better relate to something when it's named. Like: ".. i'm still runnning gutsy, not yet upgraded to Hardy". Its better Marketing. I wonder how many people know which version of Windows Vista is. not too many, it is "Vista".

The version numbers are easy. It's the year and month of release.

April 2008 = 04.2008 or 8.04

As for the names, I have no idea.
