Until recently all videos provided by Youtube were encoded as flash videos in the format .flv. With the recent addition of high resolution videos, or lets say higher resolutions than before, Youtube now provides mp4 videos of most videos on site as well. Now if you download videos directly from Youtube with the common methods like using the Internet Cache, download managers like Orbit Downloader or Firefox extensions like Download Helper you still end up with flv files.
If you want to download Youtube videos as mp4 files right now you can use one of two options. The first is provided by a bookmarklet that can be used in Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer. The Get Bookmarklet [via Google OS]has to be saved as a bookmark, best way would be to drag it into the bookmarks toolbar for fast access. While bookmarklets are nice they require action for every video that you want to download, not that great.
A better solution is to use a Greasemonkey script that adds the functionality to Firefox automatically. Download Youtube Videos as MP4 is a small Greasemonkey Script that adds a Download as MP4 link beneath the video information box on the right pane of the video page. You need to right-click that link and select Save As from the menu to download the video as mp4.

The bookmarklet for saving You Tube videos in .mp4 is wonderful.
There is apparently no good software, free or paid which allows the user to save screen capture to .mp4 with good synced sound in mp3., and simple to use. I have searched high and low. I know that highcriteria.com has an add-on to their Total Recorder .mp3 software. I am sure that it works. But, as an experienced user of theri .mp3 software, I also know that it is complex beyond belief.
I am using WM Capture from Applian. It is fine, well synced for about an hour. But I did a four hour file. At the end of the four hours, it was way out of sync.
Have you thought about developing something that woul save what is on the screen in .mp4 or .avi, and be4 as easy to use as your You Tube bookmarklet?
Believe me, there is a market for it, certainly at least as shareware.

VDub won’t directly output to mp4, but it also won’t fall victim to the problem some software has with .avis above 2GB, such as Camstudio.
It will be simple to edit the resulting files afterwards using something like Avidemux, and then to perhaps transcode it with x264 into the .mp4 container. Check some guides on doom9 for info on this part.

I have moved this process to Real Player 11, free with a downloader. It does a way better job with syncing audio and video. It downloads files a .flv, but it has converters built right in.
