Software Updates Week 15

It’s Wednesday again which means that I take a look back at the software releases of the last seven days and list those that I like, use or have mentioned before on this website. It is a opinionated article and I encourage you to add applications that have been updated but were not mentioned in this article. I might have missed the update or did not know about the app in first place.

Last week was rather busy with updates for lots of applications that I use on a daily basis. It’s almost like developers prefer to release new versions en masse in the same intervals. You will find the usual beta releases of popular applications like uTorrent, Opera and 7-zip in the list. These get updated so frequently that I thought about making a post when they are not updated in a week. (just kidding of course).

The application of the week award goes to Winmerge this time. WinMerge 2.8 is an excellent visual text comparison and merging software that has been released in version 2.8 this week which means it came out of beta.

µTorrent 1.8 Build 9363 – fast lightweight Bittorrent client.

7-Zip 4.58 Alpha 7 – a very popular software archiver.

Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool 1.40 – checks the computer for specific malware and removes those. Not a complete solution though.

Mp3tag 2.40c Beta – mp3 tagging software with advanced features.

Notepad++ 4.8.5 RC – excellent Notepad replacement with lots of added features.

Opera 9.50 Build 9903 – Tobey says Opera is the best. It’s definitely awesome.

TUGZip 3.5.0.0 – another archiver.

VLC 0.8.6f – I have been using VLC to play all of my videos before I made the switch to SMPlayer. This is indeed a great player.
