Regalyzer is a free program for Microsoft Windows that you may use as a third-party program to edit the Windows Registry. It features advanced options such as the ability to enter a Registry path to jump to keys quickly.

It is seen by some as the big brother of the free Regscanner application but the purpose of both programs is not the same, really.

Don't get me wrong, Regscanner is a great program but it has one significant weakness, and that is the fact that you cannot edit the Registry in the software directly but have to rely on Regedit to edit the entries that you have found with Regscanner.

Note: Regscanner was last updated in 2011. The program runs fine on all versions of Windows that Microsoft supports, however.

Regalyzer, on the other hand, offers most of the advanced search capabilities of RegScanner but combines those with options to edit data in the Registry directly.

The main Regalyzer window looks similar to that of Regedit, the built-in Registry editor of the Windows operating system. The program displays a toolbar at the top that acts as a search and location bar.

Regalyzer remembers keys you typed or pasted so that you can jump to them again at a later point in time. You can type or paste Registry keys in the location field to jump to the key directly; very handy if you quickly want to change a setting and have the full key at hand.

The search is independent of the main program and opens up in a new window. It displays the result just like Regscanner does which means that all search results are displayed immediately, and you are not forced to jump from the result to result like in Regedit.

Four Search Styles are available: Simple Search, Wildcard Search, Boolean Search and Regular Expressions.

You can also limit the search to a specific range, certain data types and several other options. There is also a find and replace feature buildt-in. Once you have selected a key you will notice that the program displays additional tabs in the interface. Those are: Security Information, Additional Information and Change Log which you may access.

  • Security Information -- lists users with access to the key.
  • Info Database -- lists key and value information, if available.
  • Change logs -- keeps track of changes made to the key or values.

Regalyzer supports advanced features on top of all that. You can connect to a remote Registry using it or open saved Registry hives that are not loaded by the system. There is a bookmark option to save important Registry paths, and import and export functionality.

Closing Words

Regalyzer is a powerful Registry Editor for Windows that offers functionality that the default editor lacks. Microsoft did add a location field to the Registry Editor in Windows 10 but has not touched the editor otherwise in years.

The main downside when it comes to Regalyzer is that the program has not been updated for years and that you should not expect updates anytime soon.
