Ubuntu 8 makes it even easier to try out Linux

One aspect of installing Linux has always been a major hindrance for inexperienced users. The fact that you had to partition your hard drives in order to install Linux on your computer. While the procedure itself has become easier it was always mandatory to partition your hard drive. The good news is that this is going to change with the release of Ubuntu 8.

According to Techworld (and Dante) Ubuntu 8 can be installed and uninstalled just like any other software in Windows. This is thanks to Wubi which I have written about earlier already. There is no need for an extra partition and no change to the Windows bootloader. This is a fantastic opportunity to test Ubuntu for several days or even weeks before making a decision to switch completely to Linux or dedicate hard drive resources for a Linux partition.

Wubi will be accessible in the root of the Ubuntu CD. The new version of Ubuntu will be released in 21 days, currently a beta version can be downloaded from the homepage of the Linux distribution. I will finally make the switch to Linux when I have ordered and build my new computer. Linux will be the main system and I’m currently not sure if I will keep a Windows partition on another drive. Probably will because I need it to test new applications for Ghacks.

Congratulations to your “switching-decision”- Seriously!

But i gotta warn you: Because you’re so into new, helpful tools, making things easier and so, - you won’t switch back.

Just one example: Your “Software Update…” Articles. If you install Software from repositorys in Linux, there’s no need for manually updating all your programs.
It’s like Windows-AU would search and update all your favorite Programs, you will never see that happen, but it’s true in Linux.

What parts did you choose for your new build? It might not fit in your schedule but a multipart article involving the new Ubuntu 8 and installation/setup/thoughts with your new rig might be a great series… Keep up the great work…

Actually nothing is going to change with release of version 8… Because wubi was working with version 7 pretty fine for a long time. :) They just decided to bundle it instead of being separate application.

Yeah, Rarst. Us Windoze users are lazy by nature. Going back to disparate DOS-like coding sends our little brains packing. Anything integrated into nice colorful cartoons/GUI interface will make our lives easier.

I’ve actually just used Linux on and off because Windoze is so much more convient. This is the main problem with Linux, it’s not packaged for lazy folks like me.

Linux would be the best thing going if only one could install software and drivers like you can do in windows. clicking onto a icon and it self installs..going into command mode is not for the weak hearted it can and is a problem for most people. another thing some versions find the graphics drivers and install compiz fusion others don’t why is that?
