Installing Firefox add-ons from the hard disk

I have been experiencing some troubles installing Firefox add-ons after updating to the latest version of Firefox and was not able to find out why the following is happening when installing add-ons. I sometimes receive download errors after accepting the installation which sometimes work after repeated attempts but sometimes fails all the time.

As I said I was not able to find a solution for this other than to download the Firefox add-on to my hard disk and install it from there. The xpi files can be downloaded like any other file by right-clicking it and selecting the Save As entry in the menu.

The installation from the hard disk is pretty straightforward once you know where you can start it. It can actually be started in the File > Open File menu. Just located the xpi file that you have downloaded previously and the installation will start automatically. There is no security barrier that is normally asking to allow installations of Firefox add-ons from a website.

Install user agent switcher and nightly tester tool by the method ghacks described. Now:
In tester tools disable compatibility check of extensions and make all compatible.
In user agent switcher spoof your browser agent as Firefox 2.0 {If u need string is:Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox 2.0}
Go to mozilla site and install whichever extension you want directly.

I’ve found your prior article on the add-on: FEBE to be much more useful in this regard. I just set up one master Firefox template with all the add-ons I like. Than FEBE backup. And restore template at every site’s installation.

Martin, you can just drag and drop .xpi files from Explorer or another file manager supporting drag and drop (but you will be prompted about install).

Don’t forget, that CLEO (Compact Library Extension Organizer, part of FEBE/CLEO package), can help install multiple extensions at once.

Dante I did not mean to use this method as a way to install lots of add-ons, just the ones that don’t install properly on the websites.
