WordPress 2.5 released

I thought I would be having a quite evening but since WordPress released the new WordPress 2.5 just a few hours ago I will be updating my blogs to this new version hoping that everything will update flawlessly. The new version is considered to be a major step forward, lots of elements have changed in the interface for example.

The Dashboard was completely overhauled, stats build in, several optional elements, the pages to write posts have some cool new functions like multi-file uploads or full screen writing of posts. It looks rather exciting although I seem to remember that at least some bloggers did not like the new layout at all.

Upgrading could not be easier – for most blogs that is. Just download the new WordPress 2.5 installation as a zip file and unpack it to your system. WordPress suggest to make backups and disable all plugins before you start updating the blog. In my experience this is not needed unless you run a blog with lots of plugins.

I do backup Ghacks before I upgrade because that’s an important blog for me. My lesser important ones are just updated without disabling plugins and backing them up before starting the update. I already updated two blogs without difficulties, Ghacks is next. See you soon, hopefully, hehe.

I updated an english WordPress blog of mine with “The Instant Upgrade plugin for WordPress 1.0-beta2″ from Zirona.com – 30 times faster than you (says the author of the plugin). :-)

    Hi,

I updated my site to 2.5 yesterday and it went without a hitch. The theme stayed as it should – in fact, I think it looked a bit better, but I may be imagining it! The last upgrade (to 2.3.1 if I remember correctly) was a complete disaster – I lost all my database files and screwed the system. Not good.

Stefan, how does this “instant upgrade” plugin work? My hosting company keeps PHP safe-mode on, and most of these auto-upgrades I’ve tried require it to be off. It might be time to stop being cheap and find a better hosting company :-)

    Hi Colin,

unfortunately I don’t understand much of the PHP stuff. Check it out yourself: http://www.zirona.com/software/wordpress-instant-upgrade/

    Thanks Stefan.

I went to the site but could find no information about it. I have emailed them and will post whatever reply I get here, just for completeness. It would certainly be nice not to have to do all the file deletions/uploads “manually” any more.
