A week ago Wordpress released some shots of their upcoming tweaks to the admin for version 2.5. I have to say that it looks good, I don’t think this is what Wordpress needs to be judged by.
Apparently theme authors will need to update, as well as plugin developers, but this is also sort of superficial. If you have some skill at html and css you can create any admin panel you want, it doesn’t take too much time. If you have a bit more skill, you can also create your own plugins.
What will really count in my opinion is the backend, how MySQL is used, optimizing code there will go much further than any theme changes they make. My site crashed monthly when I got some visitor surges because of some apparent problem in the way Wordpress handles databases. I got it fixed with a cache plugin, but it would be much easier if it were built in.
So far I’ve only heard about the Wordpress people going on and on about the admin interface, when that is of secondary importance I think. I hope they are making code changes as well, Wordpress hasn’t disappointed me so far, I hope they won’t do so now.

Wordpress 2.7
People were expecting it to be released last March 10th but it wasn’t released then 2 weeks ago was supposed to be the new released date sadly that didn’t happen and a Beta RC1 was realesed to some tester and sneak peak was released to everyone.
Wordpress Camp in Dallas is said to be again the next target released date. For me, as long as its stable I’m willing to wait.
You can also find some demo site in bloggingpro site. I have tried it through a demo site and I like the new Admin page.
I agree, I am happy to wait for Wordpress 2.5, especially since the current release is so good too :)
I’m a big one for looks, but 90% of what’s there you could do already. It’s the backend I’m interested in, I’m eagerly awaiting it :)
