Update: The giveaway is not available any longer. You may however download Data Recovery Wizard Free from the EaseUS website instead. The program is limited in terms of data that you can recover using it. The free version lets you recover 1024 MB of data for free which you can increase by another Gigabyte by sharing the software on social networking sites. If you need to recover more than that, you need to upgrade to the pro version. End

Todays Giveaway of the Day [Gotd] is a file recovery software named Data Recovery Wizard. Let me explain the Gotd concept briefly. The website lists one commercial software every day that is free to download and use. Companies use this for marketing purposes while the users get free applications. Great concept and you can really find the occasional gem on that site.

The Data Recovery Wizard software retails for $69.99 usually and can be compared to recovery tools like Recuva although it provides a far more sophisticated way to search for and recovery files. Supported operating systems are Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Windows Vista (Update: It supports all recent versions of Windows).

All you need to do is download the application from the Gotd website and install it today. This activates the software and you can use it.

The free version displays a simple wizard on start that you use to specify which types of files you want to recover. This can be useful to speed up the scan of the program as it will only include the file types you specify and not others.

If you are unsure, keep the all files types box checked and hit next on the screen.

The program displays common locations and connected drives on the next page. You may select one location only for the scan which should be sufficient in most cases but could mean that you need to run the program multiple times if you want to recover files from different drives.

The scan interface displays the remaining time which provides you with an estimate of how long you have to wait for the scan to complete. Findings are not updated while the scan is still running.

Data Recovery Wizard displays the scan results in three different ways afterwards. Path displays a folder structure that you can follow, type by file group and types, and time based on dates.

Some files can be previewed right away with a click on the preview button in the interface. You may select one or multiple files for recovery and are prompted afterwards to select a folder for the recovered files. It is highly recommended not to save recovered files to the same drive as you may overwrite files you want to recover in the process.

Verdict

Data Recovery Wizard is a basic file recovery software for Windows that is held back somewhat by its recovery limit of 1 Gigabyte of data. Advanced users may miss options to specify file types or names that you want to recover among other things. A suitable alternative without limit is Recuva for instance.

Just tested it out. Great program. Now I need to find a Vista compatible program that’ll permanently wipe out all those files that this program says it can recover :)
