I use this to distinguish one folder from another.  It looks better also.  I also use this to tell me when I have installed something.  I set the icon when I have completed an install.
Now, you can do this via the right-click properties in Windows Explorer.  However, I have been using an app called Folder Tweaker (also from Donation Coder) here:
