IIRC some software actually adjusts the data within the MP3 file, whereas MP3Gain only sets an overall file gain coefficient and therefore repeated changing doesn’t cause you to lose information in the original data.

I believe that’s one of the main strengths of this software versus other solutions.

Foobar2000 does this as it plays, you can set it to track or album gain. IT does this by figuring out which is the loudest mp3 in the collection and then matches that to the whole album. there is a plugin also called Vlevel which will do it as well.

I’m using 92dB which is fine and I was not able to find any files coming up with distortion or clipping.

Good tip this one, v.useful software.

I’ve tried setting all my MP3s to 95dB but find that causes quite a few to have audible distortion/clipping. I tried 89dB (default) but that was just too quiet.

What setting are you using?
