Use Hotspot Shield to access US-only websites like Hulu and Pandora

Websites like Hulu and Pandora stop non-US-American visitors right at the doorstep telling them that the contents of the website are not available to them at all. Only US-Americans are allowed and able to view the contents, in the case of the mentioned sites movies and Internet radio.

Lob was pointing out in my article on accessing Hulu from outside the United States that there was another possibility to watch Hulu movies even if you would be living (currently or permanently) outside of the United States. His suggestion was to download and install a software called Hotspot Shield which is a free VPN solution located in the United States.

Download and installation worked fine and I did not have to configure anything by myself to get the VPN service up and running. A quick test at Hulustuff (I do not have an invite yet for Hulu, if anyone has one left feel free to pass it on to me, that would be really nice) revealed that most videos were working while some told me this: “Sorry, this video is currently unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

access hulu from outside the united states

This did not seem to be a problem with the VPN but a internal problem., maybe the video was not available anymore at all or Hulu had difficulties streaming the content.

  3. D3 says:

freetv, I just watched an episode of the office on the NBC website. You may need further help configuring the program.

  4. Benamed says:

    @D3

How did you configure the program because I can watch hulu and listen to pandora when I’m using the program but I can’t watch NBC episodes :(

    Please help :)

  5. D3 says:

Freetv, actually the program was practically plug and play. I installed it and I was off to the races. you may have to contact their technical help. sorry i couldnt have been more assistance.

  6. freetv says:

D3, have tried again but still no joy. Installed and running ok but just not showing the shows. Think I will have to do a bit more investigation as to why its not working. Cheers

  7. Yew Wish says:

freetv, it sounds to me that you’re using Firefox for a browser. For some reason, lately Firefox is having a hard time with various flash streaming websites. I suggest trying Internet Explorer instead, or another free browser.

  8. D3 says:

I used the program with FF, but logically switching browsers would be the next step.

  9. lob says:

Change your time zone to a US one such as Arizona. You’ll find then that abc.com and fox.com work. nbc and cbs also, but they’re a little slow/choppy. (You still also need Hotspot Shield running.) Also, there’s some CBS content on Joost.

  10. lob says:

Hulu puts up the 5 most current episodes of a tv show. Every time they add a new episode they remove the oldest. I’ve removed the non-working shows from the blog, and added new episodes of family guy and american dad. Any requests?

  11. Karl says:

This is good for a while, until you realise the bandiwth is limited, which pisses you off.

Any ways to get round this?

  12. lob says:

If Hotspot Shield won’t connect, saying you’ve exceeded bandwith. – Go to Control Panel, Network Connections. Right click on the connection and select ‘Disable.’ Connect using Hotspot Shield. As Hotspot Shield is trying to connect, Right click on the Connection (Network Connections) and select ‘Enable.’

This does currently work…though by advertising this little trick, perhaps not for too much longer : (

  13. Johannes says:

Is it possible to remove this hotspot bar in firefox that always reopens whenever you click on a new page?
Kinda takes up a lot of room on my screen

  14. Espen Grimstad says:

A walk through guide for setting up HotSpotShield for Hulu is available at http://www.espen.tv/myblog/viewing-hulu.com-from-other-countries.html

  15. Norm says:

I’d think twice before using Hotspot Shield for anything other than viewing streaming tv.

  16. Juan Marconi says:

I use www.globalpandora.com as there is no setup required.
