I’d recommend 4 great services:
1. Bugmenot: provides lots of usernames and passwords so you can have full access to the sites that require some kind of registration. (www.bugmenot.com)
2. Gliffy: great online webapp for drawing UML, flowcharts, networks and other diagrams. It’s flash-based and it’s “almost” free. It needs registration but you should know by know, where to find a username and password :-P (www.gliffy.com)
3. OSalt: “Open source as alternative” is their slogan. Is a search engine where you can “find open source software alternatives to well-known commercial software”. (www.osalt.com)
4. GHacks of course!

I’ve been using Netvibes for some time and I think it’s a great service and I was amazed when I saw it the first time. But since Rootly suits my needs better, I started using that instead.

Another great project I “couldn’t live without” is surely Giveawayoftheday.com. These guys rock.
Free commercial software every day, that’s like a dream.

At last, when talking about search engines, I’d mention Snap.com, futuristic search engine with additional services like SnapShot.

If google were to disappear one day.. I’d be pretty sad. I rely almost soley on google search, gmail and google reader.
Other than that most websites I find have an alternative like you said, and won’t miss for very long.
