It is relatively easy to remove drm from wmv files, all you need is the freeware called Fair Use 4 WM which can be downloaded from the link at the end of the article. You need to prepare your system to be able to remove drm from wmv files, just take a look at the following steps. You need to uninstall Windows Media Player 11 if it is installed on your system. To do that go to the add / remove programs and check the show updates box as well.
Uninstall Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Media Player 11 Runtime and restart your system afterwards. The next step to remove drm from wmv would be to delete all the contents in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM\ if it is existing. Now download and install Windows Media Player 10 or Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2. Restart the system after the installation.
Now open up Internet Explorer and visit this media player website. You will need a genuine version of Windows XP, otherwise the update button will be grayed out. Your media player will be individualized during the process.
We are almost there to remove drm from wmv files, just a few more steps and we are done. Obtain new licenses from your media providers and start fair use 4 wm. Click on recover keys, next and add the wmf files that you want to remove the drm from.
Select an directory where the drm free wmv files should be saved to and watch how fair use 4 wm removes the drm of the wmv files.

I removed WMP 11 and its runtimes from Add/Remove and when I downloaded WMP10.exe from Old Version and ran it I get “This version of windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows”, I am running Windows XP pro (Genuine).
I tried it again, reinstalled WMP 11, then removed it and its runtimes, then ran WMP10.exe and it worked, but now fu4wm13fix.exe gives me

Tried this and it works fine with some drm’d files others go through the same process but when played they are scrambled on screen. Is there a new version of drm for wmv for which fu4wmv13 doesnt work?
Why is everyone stealing the instructions a kid came up with? Why can’t people just link to his site and give him some credit instead of acting like its something they came up with? I know the kid who came up with this method of getting fair use 4 wm to work and he speant days figuring this out.
Here is the original set of instructions made by the KID!

Yeah, except in cases where you can’t just outright play the file and acquire a liscence, it doesn’t do anything. Like AOL video for instance. You have to use that stupid AOL hi-q player to get the liscence and play the content.
I get an error in the software saying that the WMA license is not mine or something to that effect. Help!!!

As for errors with FairUse4wm, you can read about their meaning in the DRM removal forum

FairUse4wm doesn’t work with the latest Windows updates that content providers force you to do. You can use other DRM removal ssoftware insted

So I can maybe save myself a couple of months more googling, is there ANY way of un-drm-ing a whole bunch of CD rips that a stupid friend allowed WM9 to rip with the DRM turned on? So now they won’t play on anything but his machine.
Or is M$ so good that nobody has managed to hose their insidious copy protection after all this time? In other words, they’ve won?
Please tell me it isn’t so.
The same thing happened to me.I legaly dowloaded
a lot of music and before I could put it on a cd
my computer crashed and burned but was able to save my music,BUT now they wont play because I am on a new puter.!I cant get the licence for any of them because they were downloaded on the other computer.!!
THIS SUCKS!I cant convert any of them either because they have to be able to play in WMP.
I feel like I am the one being CHEATED.!
I found this step by step demo on youtube

The latest released SoundTaxi Pro + VideoRip will solve this problem. it can convert DRM protected WMV to MP4 and AVI.

HI, OK, one of the posters hit one of the problems right on the head. I downloaded Daniusoft Media Converter and Soundtaxi today, too. Neither program will play or convert any video files that try to acquire a media license. I mean it just won’t happen. We spent all day trying to make it occur…these companies and all those who say it can be done are dead wrong. Unless their is an extreme misunderstanding that my tech guy mentioned to me this evening…there is no way of conversion. The engineers need to sit down with their product and try to convert a file that needs to acquire a license that was loaded into their GUI….haha, that would be funny, they would be quitting their prospective jobs fearing they would be sued for libel. Anyway, just for the record, can these DRM videos be converted and played in WMP< anyone, psingman
