How to easily dump PS3 movies and games

I don’t know why Sony is so obsessed with Linux, it just does not feel right but I really can’t find a good motive for the support – yet. Some guy apparently installed Linux Fedora Core on his Playstation 3 and dumped everything that he could get his hands on. He was able to dump a complete game disc to his external usb hard drive that he connected to the PS3.

Some days later he managed to do the same with a Blue-Ray movie which means that everything is set to get the warez scene going. I think it is kinda strange that it was always easy to copy games for the Playstation systems and many people think that the success of the Playstation systems could be connected to this.

This got me thinking. Why did not Sony try and dump their discs if they knew everyone would be able to install and use Linux on the Playstation 3 ? Did they all miss it or was it probably something they did not care about or even wanted ? What do you think about this ?

I’ve also been puzzled by Sony’s seeming lack of interest concerning piracy. PS/PS1 was really easily hacked and the PS2 was equally open to such hacks. Now with Linux running on the PS3 so easily out of the box, I wouldn’t be surprised to see PS3 games subject to piracy before February. I know that the back-up function definetly

I think Sony realises that piracy will not eat into their profits the same way that it does in the music/dvd industry.

You’re talking about a small percentage of people with a high geek-factor who will be able to install the hacks and download the games.

On the flipside, as you mentioned, you get a lot of buzz among the geeks who enjoy running linux on it.

I also heard an explanation that makes sense to me. Sony knows that you can run emulators on Linux, so by endorsing Linux they are giving a wink and a nod to your turning the PS3 into the ultimate games emulator.

You guys are vastly under-aware of Sony’s global efforts to crack down on piracy. They even did so much to get online stores/brick and mortar store to shut down completely or stop selling PSP to regions where it was not released yet (aka importing). They take this very seriously, and they are also very smart. To date you can play backup games on Xbox 360s and Wii’s (not to mention all of the previous generations), however this is not so with the PS3.

As far as including Linux support, I think they did it because they could and there was rabid support among a small group of people for the Linux toolkit on the PS2 when it was released. They were also working on the Cell platform and Linux, so they had a lot of work done already =).
