Ipod Errors and Freezes – how to fix them

Ipods can be compared to small computers that thankfully do not run on a windows operating system. They still tend to spit out an occasional error once in a while. Most of the time it either freezes, is stuck in disk mode or displays other errors that are not that common. (like icons that should not be there).

Most of the time a simple reboot while do the trick. Apple unfortunately decided not to include an on/off switch which means this has to be done by pressing a combination of buttons on the Ipod. If a relatively new Ipod froze up or displays an error do the following:

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Some users report that this method is not working for them, the Ipod was still frozen or displayed an error message. Those users had success by reseting the Ipod the following way:

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Middle buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Users with an older Ipod will have to do the following:

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Apple published additional tips if this procedure did not work out, here is what they suggested.

If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn’t set to go to sleep.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.

When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time is preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.

I have an older IPOD (Ipod Mini 4 GB) that will no longer hold a charge (at all, even when I have charged it for 24 hours). I have already tried putting it in IPOD disk mode.

It still should be covered under a Best Buy 3 year warranty, but I am trying to keep from having to send it away for a while.

    Any suggestions?

  30. HELP! says:

i have the latest (5th gen?) 4gb Nano

my battery ran fully low after i used it for like a week without charging… so i connected it up to the computer to charge it.

the thing is, my nano really fussy and only shows up as ‘connected’ to the computer when it feels like it… and today it didn’t feel like it, so it won’t charge.

when i turn my nano on, the little ‘warning! low battery, connect to power!’ sign comes up (and i connect to the computer but it won’t connect), then it freezes, so i reset it and the apple sign comes up. then it the warning screen comes up again… and the cycle starts over again. and again. and again!

what can i do to charge it, which i think would solve the problem?… (i am connecting it straight to the computer using the cable thing it came with so that can’t be the problem?!)

can any chap help?! x please
