I’ve been using the video downloader extension for firefox for some time, a nice extension. I recently discovered the download helper extension which does basically the same thing that the video downloader extension does: It makes it possible to save videos and other files from websites such as youtube, google video and dailymotion. Download Helper is able to detect files that it is able to download automatically, all you need to do is click on the icon and select to save the file.
Icon ? Yes you may add an download helper icon to your toolbar, use it from the tools menu or from the context menu. I would prefer an entry to the statusbar instead of an toolbar but I can live with it for now. The icon plays a short animation once it detected a file that can be downloaded. Clicking in the icon displays a list of all files available and moving the mouse over an entry marks the file on the webpage that would be downloaded.
One very nice feature is to mark part of the website and use the context menu to view a list of all files that can be downloaded from the marked area. Right-clicking one link is of course available as well.
Download Helper currently supports not that many different websites as video downloader but you could try the “check url” option to see if you can download a file although it is not displayed in the list of auto-detected files.

[...] With the popularity of video portals like Youtube came the desire to download the videos to the local computer system to be able to watch them (again) offline or to convert them to burn them to DVD and watch them on TV. Hundreds of applications and software programs have been designed to fill that gap and we already reviewed many of them in the past including popular download manager like Orbit Downloader or the Firefox add-on Download Helper. YEah, this plugin is much much cooler than the previous Video Downloader Extension. Thanks for the heads up.

indeed, a very useful extension, much more versatile than Video Downloader. Never the less you can customize the type of files that you wish to detect…

very good
Download helper works well with puppy linux 2.17.I was able to download videos from youtube using this extension.
On a related note, the downloaded file is an flv file which requires one to download a tweaked ffmpeg using puppy software installer. The default gxine has only video but no sound until patched. With the two dotpups ffmpeg2007-01-02.pup and ffmpeg2-2007-01-02.pup I am now able to view the video perfectly.
i downloaded donwloadhelper and when i save the videos and when i check it after to open the files it won’t open , what can i use to open the file ?
Matt videos are most likely in flash video format. To be sure check the file extension. You can use SMPlayer to play these for instance, it’s the video player that I use and recommend.
