TVU Player is a free media player that uses P2P technology to stream tv channels like ABC, ESPN, Disney and HBO. Everyone using TVU Player will recieve and send data from the streams in order to be able to stream the tv channels to an almost unlimited amount of users. I recently wrote about tvu player, first in a Worldcup Preperations article that explained how one could view the worldcup using tvu player, and then in first version of the tvu player faq.
I recieved some new information about the tvu player and thought it would be best to write a new tvu player faq article instead of updating the old tvu player faq. It addresses all major problems people have with the tvu player and tries to find a solution for most of them.
TVU Player FAQ
TVU Player Requirements:
- What are the requirements for tvu player ?
- TVU Player 2.2 runs on Windows 2000 and higher and requires at least 256 megabytes of ram. A fast internet connection is advisable, usually 500 Kbs+.
TVU PlayerConnection Problems:
- I do not see a channel list after installing TVU Player
- This error only occured in previous versions, install the latest version of TVU Player and everything should be fine.
- If the error persists download the following files from rapidshare and put them in your tvuplayer directory, they are a channel list filled with channels, this helped some users. Replace the new files with the old ones.
- It seems that this fix is only temporary, the problem returns when you restart. A tvu player user wrote a small start script that copies both channel files and starts tvu player afterwards. You can download it here.
- Put all the files in the same directory and create a shortcut to TVURunIt.exe.
- Whenever you want to start tvu player you do it by clicking on the shortcut of tvurunit.exe.
- If you experience bad or no picture problem with download/upload data, you may try:
- Upgrade your Windows Media Player to Windows Media Player 10
- If the problem still occurs, try the following steps
- Have VLC player installed on your computer. (Video lan client)
- Right click the “TVUPlayer� icon on your computer’s Desktop
- Select “Properties� -> “Shortcut�
- Append � -v� (with a leading space) at the end of the line in the “Target� box If the line in Target box is: “C:\Program Files\TVUPlayer\TVUPlayer.exe� then after appending, the line should be like this: “C:\Program Files\TVUPlayer\TVUPlayer.exe� -v
- The Buffer up to 100% with no picture and sound
- This is most of the times a temporary issue, try again later.
- The streaming stutters / stops, buffers all the time.
- Try the (low) bandwidth channels. Please note that you need a broadband connection.
- TVU Player cannot be initialized, please check the network connection
- This can have two causes as far as I know. First you need to check your firewalls settings if it blocks the ports that tvu player needs to connect to the channel list and the streaming clients. Second it could be that you are using a proxy server which does not allow connection to the tvuplayer at all. Quoted from the comments of Worldcup Preparations post. (thanks gornea)
- At start TVU Player uses UDP 3950, 3951 and 3952 then at least one of TCP 3950, 3951 or 3952. The TV channels list is obtained from a connection on port TCP 8080. All those connections are made to the server previously mentioned by others. When you choose a TV channel it uses UDP 3940 and then a TCP connection to 3940. Then you just get a rain of connections to other servers using UDP/TCP combinations. In the end it settles to only UDP streaming between peers and an brief TCP reconnection for control and status I guess.
- Why did nothing happen, when I selected a channel?
- Could be a problem with your network connection, you need to grant TVU Networks the right to access the network by opening the ports mentioned above. It could also mean that the network connection is down, try to restart the player or try later again.
Known TVU Player Bugs:
- I have no sound on certain channels
- A bug exists which should be addressed in the next update. 1.5. users update to TVU Player 2.2.
- My screen is almost green, and cannot see the picture.
- Press refresh button often resolve this issue.
Misc TVU Player Topics:
- TVU Player Log file.
- TVUplayer creates a log file which might help you in finding out why something is not working. It is located in the tvuplayer directory. You can check on the ports that the player is using on your system, you see if it was able to show the channel list and more.My player is working fine and my log file is showing some problems , the following could be normal and temporary. Nope! That problem was not fixed with v2.2.0 … at least not for everyone. And, as I pointed out in the previous post regarding this program, trying to get help from their “support” department is a waste of time and not worth the effort. They simply do not respond.
I thought the channel list was permanent in 2.2 ?

I can´t seem to find the reference but I read somewhere that TVU Networks has an agreement with the companies and that Disney owns a share of TVU Networks. Will try to find this again..

A user of the TVU forum is reporting that he had no channel list because of missing files. He downloaded the the missing files from a different source and added them to his tvu player directory and was able to see the channel list afterwards.

Hi, I just installed the TVU Player and everything seems fine: strong signal, channel list..
but: nothing starts playing?!
it’s just buffering a lot of megabytes but I neither have a picture nor sound or anything alse..
I may hit the > (play) button as often as I want to without any effort.

what version of ESPN Asia do you get with TVU Player? I realise that different Asian countries have different TV listings
The “playing-without-output” problem does only occur with one of my computers, on all others it works very well. AWESOME. I like it.
For all others that do not have a picture or sound with the embedded player, you may try this:

So 2.2 loaded fine and all the channels are there, but I can’t get a channel to download or buffer. The status bar always reads “Ready”. The picture on my TVUPlayer screen has changed from the green TVU logo to the orange construction cone that used to show on the older version as well. Any ideas?

I resolved my problem with getting version 2.2 to work. I am using a Verizon broadband card along with the Venturi client. Once I removed the Venturi program 2.2 worked great! There is some conflict with Venturi and 2.2.

After running the second time, I am able to get the channel list. Hope it helps.

Please i need help, i already download the VLC player, the TVU player with all permits in my firewall, and the shortcut with -v, but nothing happens. No buffer only the Ready sign. No image, no sound. I’d really apreciate some help.

To those who get the “Failed to load xml file ‘C:\Program Files\TVUPlayer\PeerList.xml”-error: Open that PeerList.xml file (with notepad or other editor) and if the last character to that file is “0″, then remove it and save.
Before I did this, status bar displayer only “Ready” when changing channels. After the change I can fianlly watch channels. Unfortunately that “0″ keeps re-appearing to that PeerList.xml.

Some channels disappear (usually right before I want to watch them), is this normal? Also, i was examining the installation folder and noticed a bunch of images for stations that aren’t in the channel list (cartoon network). How do I setup tvuplayer through my d-link router? It connects fine when I hook up direct through my isp but won’t connect when I go through the router and i have 2 computers running through the router and don’t want to keep disconnecting the one just to watch tvu direct thru my isp.

up until nov 28th or so, espn was on TVU; then it mysteriously disappeared. I only came across this site because i am scouring the net looking for a patch.

I am able to connect fine going directly through my ISP but when trying to connect through my d-link router all I get is connecting a few times and then closed. I have set up the proper settigns to pass through my d-link router. Maybe it is just that the tvu player will not connect through a router at all. Can someone please help me?

I came home this evening and quickly turn on the computer and start up TVU and there was no channels, i left it on for about 20-25mins and i saw some channels. From reading everyones messages, i`m of the opinion that there is something wrong with TVU server and not the user`s setup.

I tried my TVU Player version and it is working fine. Channels appeared right after program start and I was able to connect to CCTV-5 without problems. Fluent Picture and Sound. I did not try other channels but Us channels are there.
I’m using the latest TVU Player version which is 2.3.0. My suggestion would be to upgrade to the newest version which could solve the problems that you experience.

It is on and off. Fox seems to work fine. Watched Judge Hatchett and Maury yesterday at about 11 GMT but then at 5:30 am GMT the player “failed to initialize”. Qu’est qui arrive?
I haven’t been able to connect since the 26th. I get it open channel list there (USA GONE :o( ) but ever channel starts to connect but says stopped after a few minutes and get nothing! I can’t even get fox and that was usually my channel that usa and fox news. now nothing.
Tried to download new version but since I downloaded 12/1/06 I think I already have it but the website for download doesn’t work. I just want to get news at least :o(

TVU isn`t gone neither it isn`t dead.
They have server issues that they working on.
The best thing i can tell u guys is to keep trying to connect the player. My first attempt failed. I tried it the second time and left it on for about 20 mins and i got the channels from there on i didn`t have anymore problems with the player beside the good channels which are missing.
Hopefully the channels should be back because the same thing might be happen to the person that was streaming it

Hey, I’m trying to connect to MTV via TVU but i keep on having the same problem: the buffer keeps skipping so i get a few seconds of image and sound, but after that, Black screen of death, repeating over and over again…

new version released yesterday at their website. I have tried and tried to download but it just sits there. the highest I can get is 9%. Well once it did it all in like 2 minutes but when tried to open said it was a zip tried to extract said nothing to extract?!?

Like Moaz wrote on January21st, i have the same problem. I have already tried system restore and reinstall all TVU SOAP PPcast but the problem seem to be Windows Media Player which i almost could reinstall using setup.exe i found in the wmp directory but it let me because of a newer version already installed in my win vista. There is no way to uninstall WMP and there is no downloadable version for win vista.
Win Med Player has a wear behavior with videos that i used to watch at any screen size.
I think somehowe sombody is blocking streaming videos (Norton, Microsoft i don’t know) is curious that recently ESPN en español web page is offering PPV on soccer games like Champions League.

I bought the tvu package and I’m suspose to be able to watch it from now on but I can’t get it to work every time I bring it up it goes off and I can’t keep it running
Hasta hoy me conectaba bien a TVU pero me ha dado por descargar TVU 2.4.0.1 setup y ahora cuando clico en el icono sale un aviso “DataBase initialized failed!! You may need restart your computer. Aceptar” he borrado el programa y lo reinstalado varias veces y no consigo que arranque. Alguien puede ayudarme?. Gracias

TVU seems to be undergoing some network issues, the problem isn’t at the end user but the main stream it self, so no matter what version of TVU you installed, the issue will be the same.
Remember a week ago when the tv listing guide wasn’t working? Its still doesn’t even show the complete guide yet.
Just give it some time guys, TUV will sort out it self.

Check for updates for mmswitch.ax
Go online to check for and install updates that might be available for mmswitch.ax:

Disable thumbnail view in Windows Explorer
Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
Click the View tab, and then select the Always show icons, never thumbnails check box.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Uninstall the program that caused the problem
If this problem occurred after you installed a new program, the problem might be caused by that program. If you know which program you just installed, you can uninstall it.
Click to open Programs and Features.
Select the program you want to uninstall, and then click Uninstall. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Note
If the program that you want to uninstall is not listed, it might not have been written for this version of Windows. To uninstall the program, check the information that came with the program.
Use the regsvr32 command to unregister mmswitch.ax
If you don’t know which program is causing this problem, you can remove mmswitch.ax from the list of installed codecs by unregistering it.
Note
Disabling mmswitch.ax will cause any programs that depend on the codec to stop working or lose functionality.
Click the Start button , and then, in the Search box, type Command Prompt. From the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
At the command prompt, type regsvr32 /u mmswitch.ax, and then press ENTER. mmswitch.ax is now unregistered.
What do I do if the regsvr32 command fails or returns an error?
If the steps to disable the mmswitch.ax did not work, you can try renaming the file to disable it.
Click the Start button , and then, in the Search box, type mmswitch.ax.
In the list of search results, right-click mmswitch.ax, and then click Open file location.
Right click mmswitch.ax, and then click Rename.
Rename the file (for example, change the name to mmswitch.ax.old). Remember the file name so you can enable it later if you need to.

Issue: when i starting i am getting TVU networks screen on my monitor, after 5 to 8 sec that is disapearing and player is not working. if any one faced this issue then please tell me how to solve this.
