Mozilla Firefox comes pre-installed with a selection of search engines that you can use right away in the browser; Google Search is the default search engine. Other search engines include Bing, Yahoo, Amazon or eBay that users may select as the default search engine or use for individual searches.

If you are using other search engines regularly, you may want to modify the default selection. While it is relatively easy to change to one of the other search engines already installed in the browser, it may not be clear how you can change to another search engine not added yet.

There are several options that you can make use of to install search engines in Firefox. Some search engines get added automatically as soon as you run the first search, others may be added using the search bar of the browser.

There are two options next to that to add search engines through installation:

The first leads to the Mozilla search engine page that you can use to find and add search engines to Firefox.

How it works? You can either pick one of the search engines displayed right on the front page, start to browse categories instead that you may be interested in, or try and find a search engine by searching for it. Just enter the name or url of the search engine in the form and select a category, country or language optionally.

The question of course is, which should you add? I can't answer that question for you but can name some that could be worth to add to your search engine list: YouTube, Duck Duck Go, IMDB or Technorati for example.. Please note that you will find search engines for different languages there, so pay attention before you start adding a search engine that provides results in a language that you do not understand.

The second option is to install search engines right from Mozilla's Search Tools page. Browse the listing here to find one that you want to use. You can use the search providers category on the left to browse specific types only. A click on download now adds it to the Firefox browser, so that you can select it in the search form like any other search engine.

Update: It is time to take another look at what the Mycroft Project website has to offer. When you first open the homepage of the service you will notice that search at the top. You can use it to search for a specific search engine right away. If you want, you can filter results by category, country or language.

The top 10 search engines are listed right beneath. They include Facebook, YouTube and Baidu among other search engines that may already be included in the browser.

Below that is the category listing with hits thousands of search engines.
