Tonight firefox 2.0 beta 1 release candidate has been uploaded to the mozilla ftp site and can be downloaded from there. Funny thing that happened to me was that I installed the new version and tried to run it but it would only start a new instance of firefox 1.5.0.4. That is until I tried to run firefox 2.0 without a 1.5.0.4 in the background.
The first thing that happened was a compatibility check and most of my plugins were deactivated because they were incompatible with the new release. The new version looks like the old and feels like the old. Changes have been introduced in the background mainly. One great addition is the anti-phishing feature which adds nicely to other security features of firefox.
I´am typing the text in firefox and there is some sort of real-time spell checking running in the background, real good for me and a great feature. There are surely more features that I did not discover until know but I surely will.
Firefox 2.0 beta 1 release candidate is great for everyone who wants to take a glimpse at the upcoming browser. It is not working with many extensions at the moment, if you rely heavily on them I suggest you wait until the creators are offering support for the new firefox as well.

just one thing, if firefox 2.0 deactivates your extensions than this has also the effect on 1.5.0.4. The extensions will be deactivated if you start 1.5.0.4 again and you have to activate them again in the extensions menu. (Tools -> Extensions)
Right click an extension and select enable.
You will have to restart the old firefox afterwards.
What is performance like?
I was not able to witness a performance increase
Pity. That’s the only thing I hate about Firefox.
What’s the use if I can’t use most of my plug-ins cos of compatibility issues? Why be in a rush to download and install a beta software?
I’d stick with my version 1.5.0.4 for now. :)
Extensions are deactivated based on the compatibility range defined by their authors: If an extension is specified by its author only to be compatible with 1.x then Firefox will deactivate it in 2.x, simply because the author said so, not because it won’t work. 90% of all extensions actually do work once the compatibility status has been updated.
You can either do this manually or use the “Nightly tester Tool” ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/958/ ) which adds a “Make compatible” option to the Addon manager.
Both a Beta 1 AND a Release Candidate? Pick one or the other, Mozilla. It can’t be both.
