I thought this was kind of a joke when I heard about the following story a few minutes ago.William Reardon received email newsletters from the payment processing company PayPal although he never had any dealings with the company or its parent company eBay.

The newsletter itself contained an unsubscribe link, but the option to unsubscribe was only in the account settings and not directly on a public page.

The problem here was of course that he did not have an account and could therefor not log in to it to unsubscribe.

He contacted PayPal customer support about the issue and was told that they needed him to fax a valid photo ID, bank statement, credit card statement and proof of address (phone or utility bill) to process his request. Certainly overkill for unsubscribing to a newsletter, don't you think? It would be interesting in this regard if anyone else has issues with PayPal in regards to the newsletter the company sends out.

One possible explanation for the newsletter is that another user has added Will's email address to a PayPal account. It may have been a typo in the email address that led to the situation. Considering that you can only subscribe to newsletters from within a PayPal account, it seems to be the most logical explanation at this point in time.

For those who are asking, Paypal users who want to unsubscribe from notifications or newsletters can do so in the following way:

  • Log in to the Paypal account
  • Access Profile > My settings > Notifications
  • Uncheck boxes that are checked
  • Click on the Save button

email notifications from paypal

This should disable all notifications for the account in question. This was obviously no option for Will, as he did not have access to the PayPal account in question.

Update: Note that you can't uncheck some email notifications. This includes information about Policy updates and account information notifications. The latter include changes that are made to the name or address, password, bank account or email address associated with the PayPal account.

I unfortunately created an account and went through the painful process of ‘unsubscribing’ and i can tell you even if you manage to sign in with the correct username / password and find the page which changes? the settings to not recieve the newletter, it still does not work the junk “newletters” still keep coming and there is not a single contact email listed on paypal to complain to, funny how it is very one sided communication isnt it
