The Next Gen War (Microsoft vs. Nintendo vs. Sony)

Microsoft already released their Xbox 360 to the masses and is recieving favourable reviews especially for they xbox live service. Nintendo was the shining star of the last E3 with their revolutionary Wii system and Sony has still the largest fan base of all system makers but is apparently strugling with their playstation 3.

Two of the three major players decided to use the latest technology for their systems while the remaining company is heading into a different direction. I have some troubles identifying the innovations of the Microsoft Xbox 360 system and the Sony Playstation console. Sure, they got high definition, more cpu and gpu power, more ram, hard drives, Blue-Ray (Sony) and HD DVD (Microsoft) support and they seem to be battling each other to win the next gen crown.

Still, their systems look like their old systems with more power to me and some tiny modifications. Where are the innovative games for the Xbox 360 ? I suppose I have to ask the same question once the PS3 comes out. Where is the innovation ? Better graphics ? Sure. More fun ? Not neccessarily.

What about Nintendos approach ? I was never a big Nintendo fan, being a Sega supporter my whole life. Don“t get me wrong, I loved to play some classic Nintendo games like Mario Kart and Mario World but I always thought Sega was making better games.

When I first read about their concept for the Wii system I was very excited. It sounded to good to be true. Finally some innovation. Finally a new approach to video gaming. Nintendo could bring back what video games were lacking the last years in my opinion. Fun and Innovation. Their controllers can be used for thousands of game concepts using natural movements of your arm / hand. Be a surgeon, tennis player, baseball star, sword fighter, whatever you like by emulating the natural movement with the controller. This could be exciting, if Nintendo manages to make it right.

Nintendo was always a quality company so I think they will make it right. It will be the only next gen system that I will buy once it comes out.

Which system will you buy ? What do you think about the systems ? Let me know.

Wii, for sure. Good, not great graphics are required for great games. Great graphics force developers to spend more money on games that may not even make enough money to break even. Spending the money on the Wii controller on the other hand, gives developers the ability to create better games with good, but not great graphics.

Also… you NEED HDTV and big TVs to fully appreciate the graphics of the 360 and the PS3. That’s just not standard in America yet. Plus, the games don’t seem to be all that fun for PS3 and the graphics didn’t look very stunning @ E3

Wii, but a Dreamcast 2 would be so much better, wouldn’t it? Oh, and no need to answer that. Great post, by the way…

Just bought an X-360. I plugged it to my plasma for a few hours and was very impressed with the graphics quality. It’s normal place will be on a spare “normal” 27″ TV.
Was going to wait until the PS3, but decided not to wait another 1/2 year. Now i’m eager for HD-DVD.

I think that Nintendo will finally be on top for a change with the Wii. Especially since they have the new Zelda game coming out as a launch title. Im going to spend at least $400 on the Wii, games, and accesories when it comes out.

ps3..is also releasing something like project natal;)

Flamez Sony is actually releasing something that copies the Wii with the addition of the EyeToy camera. Natal is a completely different concept that seems to get rid of controllers altogether.
