Many websites force you to register to see content on their site. Most claim that they won´t sell or abuse your email that you register with but you can´t be sure about this. What if you desperately want to access the content but don´t want to risk that your email account receives heaps of spam because the email has been sold to spammers ?
You could try the BugMeNot Service that lets you seek for free logins to websites, you receive logins to sites like nytimes.com or imdb.com. The BugMeNot database does not contain logins to pay sites which is understandable, it´s main purpose is to give you access to free content without the need to register to the site you visit. You can use this bookmarklet that displays a login to the current website if one exists or this firefox extension if you are using firefox.

I use BugMeNot quite a lot of times. Comes in handy if you want to check up something quick but you cannot view because of the reg-req.
