Gnome posted a nice list of freeware games over at his lair and I suggest you pay his site a visit if you are looking for new games. Some have been mentioned already in similar top lists but some are new or at least unknown to me. It looks like 20 hand picked games and reference links to more sources for additional games. Take a look if you are into games, it´s worth it. As is his whole site.
The handpicked list of freeware games includes both commercial games that have been released as freeware, and freeware games that have been designed as such from the ground up. Here is a short selection of games that you may find interesting:
Beneath a Steel Sky – A game released by Revolution software on the Commodore and PC in 1994. It can be played on today’s machines with ScummVM.
Grand Theft Auto, and Grand Theft Auto 2, both released by Rockstar, and now available as free downloads at the Rockstar Games website. Unlike newer GTA games, the first two are top down action games where you drive cars and complete missions.
Hero Quest is an adaption of the popular board game for the PC. The developer website offers the core game, as well as adventure packs designed by the author and other users of the game.
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, is a first person shooter in ID Software’s popular Wolfenstein universe. Players take command of either the Axis or Allies, and take the role of various classes to compete on multiplayer maps played on the Internet.
Free Civ is an Open Source remake of Civilization, for Windows and Mac operating systems. Users can not only download the core game, but also maps, modpacks, and new sounds for the game.
