The BBC claimed yesterday that Sony’s Playstation 3 console system would be delayed for another year which would mean the system would debut in 2007 and not in mid 2006 as expected. Unfortunately they did not cite any sources and most readers had the feeling it was simply another rumor.
Today joystiq.com cites an unnamed ex-gamestop employee who seemingly shed some light into the rumor. He claims that the developer systems that Sony sent out to the PS3 developers had some serious cooling problems which made the systems overheat and meltdown rather quickly.
He furthermore claims that Sony fired its whole Development team which should have got some media feedback but somehow did not. It seems that Sony has to consider to change the cooling system for the developer systems and probably even for the retail systems.
This in fact could explain the massive delay.
Update: Sony’s Playstation 3 debuted in 2006 in Japan with international markets receiving first PS3 units in the beginning of 2007. The system faced strong competition from Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii gaming systems. Especially the expensive price and the last on the market strategy were responsible for a rather slow start.
Sony since then has released updates to the Playstation 3 console, in particular the PS3 Slim that was released in August 2009. The Playstation 3 Slim was a redesigned version of the original console that was about a third lighter, smaller and more efficient than the original Playstation 3.
A lot of different PS3 models have been released throughout the years by Sony, ranging from a 20 Gigabyte model to today’s 320 Gigabyte state of the art model.
Sony is currently developing the Playstation 4 which will likely be revealed on this year’s E3. It is however likely that the console won’t go on sale until 2013, with some experts believing the system to make its debut as late as 2014.
