One million iTunes video sales in less than 20 days marks another astonishing success for Apples iTunes plattform. “Selling 1 million videos in less than 20 days strongly suggests there is a market for legal video downloads,” Steve Jobs, chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings, so that customers can enjoy watching more videos on their computers and new iPods.”
Update: It is six years later now and a lot has happened in the meantime. Apple has released several new devices, including the much acclaimed Apple iPhone and Apple iPad, as well as multiple iPod variants including Apple iPod Video, Nano and a slew of other devices.
The popularity of Apple devices coupled with the necessity to register the devices with iTunes has made iTunes and its store one of the most popular app, music and video stores on the Internet.
According to recent information, more than 1 billion apps are downloaded every month from the iTunes store. This is topped by music downloads which have crossed the 10 billion songs mark in 2010 .
With more than 250 million iOS devices on the market analysts predict Apple to reach sales of more than 13 billion US Dollars in 2013.
Apple is however keeping iTunes profit figures secret which some analysts have interpreted as a way to cover up low profit margins while others suggested that the company did not want to brag about the revenue that the iTunes business generated.
A IHS report in 2011 saw Apple’s market share in the U.S. online movies market drop from 74.4% in 2009 to 64.5% in 2010. This is still an incredible lead over second placed Microsoft (17.9% market share) and third placed Sony with 7.2% market share.
Analysts predict that Apple’s market share will fall further in the year 2011 due to heated competition in the market.
