With the Apple Video iPod in stores come the first user reviews about the new playtoy. Betapundit collected a list of “things” that you should know about the Video iPod before you buy one.
Here are the most important factors for you:
- No firewire. Its not possible to transfer data using firewire.
- No power cable. Only way to recharge is the USB cable.
- Playtime averages around 3h
- The Video Ipod is harddrive based, means its more likely to skip while playing
Video iPod Review: What you Should Know
The new 5G Video iPod has made many people excited to buy it on the spot. Take a moment to go through this review before you buy so that you can get an idea of what it has to offer and what it does not feature.
Like all of the iPod designs, it is sleek and appealing, available in white and black, and you just want to grab it and buy it. There is nothing wrong with that; it has some great features. However, there are some things you should know first.
It features a pristine high-resolution screen and a high capacity hard drive to accommodate lengthy videos. Despite this, it can become fatiguing to view lengthy videos on the tiny screen compared to the larger iPod Touch screen. There is no Dock included, no firewire for data transfer, no power cable except for a USB cable charger. Since it is based on a hard drive capacity ranging from 30GB to 80GB, videos are likely to skip and freeze when playing them. It is also entirely too bulky to carry during exercise, like other iPod models. These are just some things to keep in mind because the nature of the product is extremely different than small iPod revisions.
If these drawbacks are not a problem for you, then you can consider the positive features. It is capable of playing TV programs, music videos and movies as well as music. Thus it is “more than just a music player”. iPod users have become comfortable with it being a music player and do not necessarily expect more. The screen is 2.5 inches, which is smaller than some of the latest DSLR camera LCD screens. Of course, everything has to be purchased from Apple iTunes and cannot be transferred from your PC or Mac. If all of this sounds good to you, then it is probably the right thing for you to buy. Withstanding this, consider other caveats:
The tiny screen becomes quite tiring to the eyes quickly, so it is only practical to watch video media of short duration, making the hard drive capacity a questionable feature. Additionally, there is no stand for it and you have to hold it or lay it on some flat surface to watch videos. You will be holding it for a long time. It is not a home entertainment device, but Apple does include a video adapter cable that allows you to connect the iPod Video to an HDTV. If you think about it, this is obviously silly since you can do this with any laptop with an RGB or HDMI port.
This is really more of a novelty item than anything else. It is something that you can show off to your friends and temporarily impress them. Apple may have missed the mark with this iPod design. There are enough designs already and Apple may do better by improving the memory capacity on existing devices rather than creating new versions like this.

It should be noted in my post that the 5g can charge through the firewire, just not transfer. Nonetheless, still disappointing.
