New customer cell phone tracking services introduced

It all started in Korea, the cellular carrier SK Telecom introduced in 2000 a service which translates to something like “find friends”. Today more than four million Koreans are using the service. I compiled a incomplete service list, here it is:

  • send periodically messages with your coordinates to family and friends.
  • automatically send a message to a friend if hes only one block away from you
  • Automatically sends a message if a person is not at the correct place at a certain time. The recipient has the option to see the movements of the last five hours.
  • Automatically sends a message to parents if children stray from their route from home to school. Parents pay about $10 per month for the service that tracks their children on their way to and from the school.

See “Working late won´t work anymore for more information.

Update: Apps have taken the tracking to a new level throughout the world. It is now possible to install apps such as Guardian Angel to track teenagers and children via GPS technology. This particular app offers a 30-day history, and will even notice if a vehicle is used for transport. Additional information are then displayed, including the speed and direction of travel.

Parents can track their children on the service’s website. Once logged in, parents can see the current position of the cell phone and previous positions in the history.

The technology recently has been expanded with the launch of the company’s mobile telematics service. The service enables remote controlling of vehicles via mobile phones.

One of the features allows the owner of the vehicle to use a cell phone to monitor and track. While intended mainly if the car has been stolen, it can naturally be used to track family members or friends using the vehicle as well.

I suppose lots of jealous boy / girlfriends will use these services, wonder if the one who transmits his position has to allow this ?

Its still a good idea for parents who want to make sure nothing happens to their kids on the way to school.
